Pockets vs. fitteds for overnight?

We were using fitteds overnight, and DS was sleeping 9+ hours straight. This past week he started waking up more at night, sometimes 3 times a night where I would nurse and then he would go back to sleep. I thought it was teething and 4 mo wakeful at first, but then the last 2 nights we tried pockets under the wool instead and he's back to sleeping 9 hrs.

Do any of you prefer pockets over fitteds for overnight because of this? I'm afraid the absorbency won't be enough after he gets a little older. I tried using a fleece liner in his fitted one night, but everything was still soaked and feeling wet in the morning.

I have 3 sbish sized on the way and DS is usually a heavy wetter, so I'm really hoping fitteds will work for us, but now I'm wondering if pockets are really the way to go...

Please share your experiences with me!

Re: Pockets vs. fitteds for overnight?

  • The only issue we had with using pockets overnight was that DD was a really heavy wetter and got to the point that we couldn't stuff it ENOUGH.  If we were able to stuff it enough with hemp, it was so puffy that we couldn't get a tight seal around her legs, and it would leak out.  That's when we went to fitteds.  With enough hemp in a fitted, they are dry on the outside for us by morning.  I always use a fleece liner and barrier cream.

  • I've been debating this too. BG 4.0's with both microfiber inserts worked for awhile, but now he's leaking out of those. I tried an sbish fitted last night, and it was great that there were no leaks, but I literally could not make the pee smell go away when I changed him, no matter how much I wiped. Even my daycare provider noticed. So I think I'm heading back to pockets. I have a few small hemp inserts, but I think I'm going to get some larger ones.

  • So it sounds like fitteds are the way to go, but how do I deal with him waking up from wetness? I have some smallish fleece liners, but even those feel wet when he gets up from sleeping with a fitted. Do I just need larger ones? Cut them to be contoured?

  • GMD carries a stay dry hemp insert that is micro fleece on one side.  DS's fitted can be soaked all the way through in the AM (sleeps 12-13 hours) and the fleece side of that thing will still feel perfectly dry when I take it off of him.

I was just looking at buying some of these used. Thanks for the good rec - I think I'll try them! Sadly, I just bought a bunch of hemp inserts to use in my fitteds for extra absorbency (right now I'm using the occasional bamboo cv for extra) but they are not the stay dry kind. I'm sure I'll find some use for them.

  • Thirsties makes a stay dry fited too...I LOVE these.  Right now since he is only 2 months I alternate fitteds and pockets.

  • DD had the same problem with waking overnight in a non-stay-dry fitted. So, I used only fitteds that were fully microfleece-lined with her. Happy Hempys is a good option that is reasonably priced and easy to get, plus it's a pocket fitted, so you can stuff it as much or as little sa you need.
