Is this a boy or girl name?

My husband's grandmother's maiden name is Ellender and I think it's beautiful and would like to use it. As a middle name, do you think it could work for a boy, or is it strictly girl? Thanks!

    Hmm.....I don't think of a specific gender when I say it outloud, I think of colander.

    This is a hard one...but I would say its a girls name simply because if take the der off its shortened to Ellen

    If you are using it as a mn, I think it could go either way.  I don't think I would use it as a fn at all, though.

    It would only be used as a middle name, not first. One of our top boy names is Scott, top girl is Gwen. So am I right that it might work with either?

    I think it sounds alright with either name.

    I love it as a first for a girl, shortened to Elle as a nn

    For a middle it could totally go boy or girl

    I think I would use it as a girls name   and strictly middle name if using for a boy

    the Elle/Ellen just screams feminie to me
