OPK vs Charting

I need some advice. TTC for 6 cycles, starting 7 today. I have been using OPKs for the past few months but keep hearing a lot about charting. What is the difference? Is charting better? Seems like a lot is invloved in charting. Any advice or helpful websites would be great!

Re: OPK vs Charting

  • OPK's indicate when O is or has already occurred. Temping allows you to "predict" when O will occur. Patterns in our temps often exist allowing this to happen. I would check out FF...lots of really great tutorials and Q&A's. GL

  • Loading the player...
  • FertilityFriend.com. Take the tutorials, they're great. The free version of the site is more than adequate, but you can pay for more features.

Taking Charge Of Your Fertility (TCOYF) is a great book that goes into more explanation. Try FF first.

  • I started charting this cycle based on the posts by many of those on here TTC.  The problem with OPK's is that sometimes your body with gear up to O and then won't for whatever reason.  As a result of this the OPK detects a LH surge and thus leads you to believe that you are about to ovulate when in reality you don't.  The BBT lets you see a thermal shift and as a result is much more definitive of when you O'd.  If you haven't read Taking charge of your fertility I highly recommend it bc it gave me a lot on insight into charting.
  • I use both and would recommend that to anyone TTC.  I use opks to predict when I am going to O, but charting confirms that I did actually O.  Definitely check out FF, lots of info there.

Umm no, you have that backwards.

OPKs detect your the hormone LH which your body produces while gearing up to ovulate. Temping confirms that ovulation occured. You can get a +opk and not ovulate which is why both are recommended. OPK predict, temping confirms.

  • Huge difference, an OPK can be interpreted wrong and doesn't necessarily confirm O. charting does and it's not as hard as it appears at first. Good Luck

  • OPK's tell you when you are gearing up to O, but temps confirm it. OPK's can be wrong though. Just because you are gearing up to O, doesn't mean you actually will. Using both together takes a lot of the guesswork out. For me, temping is not a lot of work. I usually wake up to use the bathroom around 6am, but sleep until 7 or 9. So I set my alarm for 6, take my temp, go to the bathroom and then back to bed. It can't hurt to try. Good luck!

  • I love charting for 2 reasons, it confirms O and it gives you an idea if AF is rearing her ugly head ;p  I tried OPK sticks the first month and gave it up quickly they were annoying so we just got the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor and it has been AMAZING.  I am learning exactly when I ovulate - hoping this is our month :)))
