Wow! That's equivalent to a mini baby shower! I hear they also have great maternity leave benefits. We should get some type of benefits with the taxes we pay here, right?!

Yeah, the caveat is that their tax rate is a bit higher than ours. But they also have low unemployment (the government funds jobs training), generous maternity *and* paternity leave policies (paid and unpaid - I think you get three years unpaid leave after delivery), etc.
That is a really cute package for a new baby! Look into the awesome benefits that Germany offers, too, it's warmer there than in Finland MH and I really chose the wrong country to move to when it comes to starting our family.
I think this is one of those cases where there is just a huge difference between what is "normal" for them versus us. My best friend is Finnish (her mom was born there, so she and her siblings have citizenship and still visit family regularly). Yes, they have lots of benefits, but they also have higher taxes and things like mandatory military service for all men. However, it also comes with free post-secondary education, so yes, lots of benefits, but just an entirely different system overall.

Finland has really great benefits all around, and it's not just a good country to have babies in. World rankings rate Finland highly in quality of life indexes pretty consistently. Norway is supposed to be great as well!
