Elevated risk for NTD...help

My doctor called last night with my quad screen results, called him back this morning and he's out, so I had to talk to the nurse. She said I was at an elevated risk for a neural tube defect. That's all she could tell me, she didn't even have the ratios. I've been referred to speak to a specialist and get an amnio if I wish. I feel like I'm sitting in the dark waiting for these people to call me for an appointment. Anyone else go through this and can lend some advice or words of encouragement? This didn't happen with my DS so I don't even know what to think right now.

Re: Elevated risk for NTD...help

  • Did you have an ultrasound with the screen?  Quad screen seems to mean so many different things to different Drs, so was this just bloodwork or bloodwork plus ultrasound?  There are many instances of high AFP that turn out to be normal...

I hope you get more information soon.  :(

  • Just the blood work so far. Didn't do the NT scan before. Still haven't heard anything.
  • Then I would worry less.  Hard, I know!!  As I said AFP numbers can be up and baby is frequently just fine...these are screening tests, so more false positive than negatives.  Hopefully they will call you soon and set up whatever tests will help you get to the answer soonest!  Fingers crossed for you and for a healthy baby.

  • My bloodwork came back abnormal as well and the doctor could not give me ratio's or anything. I am going to see a genetic counselor and get an ultrasound on Monday. My doctor called Monday with my results and told me that I should hear from the ultrasound place by Tuesday and they never called...I called the doctor back today and the nurse called and scheduled the ultrasound for Monday. If I hadn't called, there's no telling how long it would have been until I heard from them.

  • I'd call back and keep bugging them.  It's awful to be just waiting.  I was at elevated risk after just the u/s.   I opted to do the CVS that day rather than wait to do the blood results.  Turned out everything was fine.  MUCH more often than not, everything turns out fine.  The waiting is the worst though.   (And yes, I did call when I didn't hear from them within 24 hours, and they called back within an hour after that.)  This is the problem with modern medicine - our parents never had to go through this! GL!
  • Sorry you are going through this; I am in the same boat!  I had an U/S that came out great with no issues seen, but my quad screen came back with a 1/120 risk of NTD.  The worst part is the not knowing and the waiting and waiting for Dr's to call back.  My Dr. wanted the Dr. who actually did my U/S to re-check the scans to see if maybe something was missed, but told me not to worry because most of the time if there is an NTD it will be found in the U/S and there are large false positives with the quad screen (I almost wish I hasn't done it!).  I would make sure to have an U/S done first before considering an amnio.  I am now just waiting for someone to call me...no call today, so if I don't hear by tomorrow afternoon I will be calling them.  Keep us updated, hopefully everything is just fine!!
