Wine Recommendations

You ladies seem like the wine experts so I need some help. I would love to find a good wine but the few that I've tried have tasted horrible to me. What would you recommend for a beginning wine drinker?

Re: Wine Recommendations

  • I'd suggest sweet wines for a beginner. You kind of acquire a taste for drier wines as you go from my experience.

Moscatos are a good white wine to start with

  • Moscatos are great!  Try a Niagra too, either regular or pink.  Catawba is always nice as well.  Where do you live?

I live a little north of Atlanta.

  • I would find local wineries and go there and play around a bit.  Important information:  Do not get drunk and buy a ton of a wine that you think you love, chances are you might not love it as much when you are sober.  After tasting all day once I bought a whole case of this wine that I LOVED.  A few days later I tried it and almost died. It was so sweet that I had to cut it with pino.

  • Sauvingnon Blanc and any from Marlborough region which I think is either New Zealand or Australia are great.

A good red is Cupcake Wines Red Velvet - so yummy

     Enjoy!

  • If you are going to try red (which takes some people a long time to grow into liking) don't get CHEAP red.  My Mom has said for years that she hates red wine - then we gave her GOOD red wine one night - and now she loves red wine.  But she stills hates the cheap swill my Dad drinks (think Crane Lake, box wine, 2-buck Chuck, etc).  You don't have to spend a fortune - but anything red under about $10 generally is that cheap for a reason.

This is a great suggestion.  But if you live in Atlanta, you may not have too many options.  Maybe try to find a wine bar or local wine store that does tastings.

And yes - I too have bought way too much crap at the end of a long day of wine tasting.  In fact, I've poured out bottles they've been so bad (although I LOVED them at the time!) Beware! LOL

Oliver Soft Red and Strawberry are my fave and they are $6. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

I googled Atlanta wineries and there where a ton.

ETA:  I see that I typed where instead of were, but I'm not changing it.  I stand behind my errors!

Thanks I'll have to check some out! I turned 21 three days before L was born so I haven't had a chance to do that yet.

  • There are plenty of options in Atlanta! Go to The Grape at Lenox or Atlantic Station and try their half-glass options to taste them. The Grape is a great way to introduce yourself to wines without having to buy the whole glass/bottle :)

    They're doing a promotional now of 3 for $15 https://www.thegrape.com/discover_wine.shtml
