Do you have any cute/special prayers or nursery rhymes you teach your LO for bed and dinner time that you'd like to share? I can't really remember any nice ones, and DD is absolutely FASCINATED when we take hands and close our eyes for a prayer before dinner. She holds our hands until we finish and even closes her eyes for a couple of seconds, and then smiles at us when we're done. It's so cute. So I'd like to teach her an easy one to encourage her to say it with us. Any ideas?
Re: Question for Christian mommies
When I was growing up, my family would say this prayer before dinner:
"God is great; God is good. Let us thank Him for this food. By His hands, we all are fed. Give us, Lord, our daily bread. Amen."
I think that's how it went, at least!
My Grandmother used this one too!
Bedtime:
"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the lord my soul to keep, and in keeping me please keep others that I see, Mommy and Daddy, and sister, and brother.,..(etc.)"
Dinner:
"Thanks God for the food and everything that is good". (simple kids prayer. Whenever we have the kids do the blessing at a meal this is the one we have them do).
We don't say anything special at dinnertime prayer. We just fold hands, close eyes and bow heads and either my H or I pray and we all say Amen.
Bedtime I currently read three books and then sing "Yes, Jesus Loves Me". He knows it coming and he tries to say the words (he's 21 months). We should start with a nighttime prayer but I thought it was too early.
My family used this one as well.
When we pray together we pray for everyone in the world, and then DD adds her friends.

I used to love when I was a kid to say grace and my favorite was "God made the sun, God made the sea, God made the fishes and God made me. Thank you for the sun, thank you for the sea, thank you for the fishes and thank you for me." My church classes must have taught it because we did like sign language for sun, sea, and fish, then point to yourself for me.
When I was a kid, I had a plaque on my wall with a variation of the standard:
"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Guard me Jesus through the night and wake me with the morning light."
My mom always thought "If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take" was too morbid for a little kid.
We sing "Jesus loves the little children", but we sing it an alternate way that my mom used to sing to me when I was little (we are Norweigan): "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world! English, Irish, Dutch, and Jew, and the little Norweigan too, Jesus loves the little children of the world"
"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. Guard me Jesus through the night, and wake me with the morning light, Amen"
When we pray and say "Amen", Maddie always claps and says "yaaaay".. lol!
When we were little we would all sing/say as a family in prayer:
"God our faaather, God our faaaather,
We thank youuu, we thank youuu,
for our many blessings, for our many blessings,
Aaaaamen, Aaaaamen..."
Do you have a traditional table prayer? G isn't old enough, yet, for the practice, but we'll use our common table prayer and have him repeat the words after us.
Come, Lord Jesus. Be our guest. Let these gifts to us be blessed.
Oh, give thanks unto the Lord. For he is good. His mercy & love endures forever.
We do this one at church potlucks and such, except with the added line - And let there be a goodly share on every table everywhere.
We do this part of "Now I lay me down"
Thank you Lord for another day,
The chance to learn, the chance to play.
Now as I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Please, guard me Jesus through the night,
And keep me safe till morning's light.

We also do now I lay me down to sleep at night. My nephew taught penny the "superman" prayer for meal times which we usually do at breakfast and lunch.
superman prayer
(to the tune of the superman theme song and standing with your hand on your hips...like your superman lol)
"Thank you GOD for giving us food,
Thank you GOD for giving us food!
For the friends that we meet,
For our daily treats,
thank you God for giving us food!"
I think he learned it at preschool. lol
Angel of God, Gaurdian Dear
To whom the Lord entrusts me here
Ever this night be at my side
To light and love, to rule and guide.
We say the Lord's prayer at dinner time...DD doesn't know "amen" yet, but we are working on it!
For bedtime I have a book called "Baby Prayers" and I read a part of that every night...it's like "thank-you, God, for the beautiful world and everything in it...etc. etc."
We have 2 prayers that DD loves:
A,B,C,D,E,F,G..thank you God for feeding me. (Sing to tune of alphabet)
Thank you Father, Thank you Father, for our food, for our food, and our many blessings, and our many blessings, Amen, Amen (Sing to tune of Are you sleeping)
Before bed:
God in Heaven hear my prayer,
Keep me in your loving prayer,
Be my guide in all I do,
And bless all those who love me too
This is my favorite blessing (thank you church camp!!)
