TTC After a Loss

Opinions on the flu shot.....

What is your opinion on getting the flu shot while TTC? The doc recommended while preg so I am assuming it would be ok to get, but I have mixed feelings about it :/   I usually get sinus infections bad but not so much the flu. I have never received the flu shot before but thought it might be good before I would get pregnant. I have heard from alot of people that you get sick after getting the flu shot and of course it does not protect you from every type of flu. I don't know if I should or not!!! What do you ladies think?

Re: Opinions on the flu shot.....

  • It's definitely a personal choice. For me, I will never again get a flu shot. I got one a few years back when my employer sponsored free flu shots to prevent it from going around and I have never been so sick in my entire life. Within a few days of getting the shot I had a 105 degree fever and was out of work for 2 weeks. Could have been a total coincidence, but I have heard of people getting very sick after getting one. Food for thought.

  • I just got mine a few weeks ago...I've been on a spree getting all my vaccines and everything else I can think of done to me lately so I'll have it out of the way if I get KU again!  I never have any problems with the shots...but everyone is different!  Some people get sick some don't.  I just have a tendency to get pneumonia if I do get the flu and I have asthma too so it's not worth the risk for me to get the flu!

  • Siggy warning

    The flu shot is not a live virus therefore it is impossible to get sick from the shot. It is still possible to get the flu after getting the shot b/c the vaccine is just a guess of what strain of the flu will be active in the upcoming season. A lot of the time they are right but sime of the time they are not. I would rather get it TTC than pg though and I do every year.

    This, I am a teacher so I get it every year to be safe.

  • I can't bring myself to get one anymore because in my head I associate it with my twin loss. I lost my twins shortly after getting the h1n1 shot. Even though they are most likely unrelated, in my head I believe I should have never gotten the shot.

  • It is Obama's way of injecting mind control.  Run far far away.

     ::readjusts tinfoil hat::

    Sorry about that.  I don't get one, but mostly because I'm just not sure that always injecting ourselves with this and that is a good idea.  It cannot give me the flu as it is a dead virus.  It is a personal decision that you should make with your doctor.

  • Because I have a DD in daycare, i plan on getting the flu shot and getting her one as well.  When i was pg with her, i got the H1N1 shot, but i was already in the 3rd tri.  This year, my plan is to get the shot before getting pg (assuming i will be able to get pg, that is).  I'd be way too afraid to get it while in 1st tri, that's for sure. My m/c changed my perspective on everything, and i'm sure i'll be a paranoid wreck.
  • Since most docs advocate in favor of the flu shot while pregnant, I figure it is fine while TTC.  I get a flu shot every year and plan to get one next week when it is offered free by my office.  I've never had a bad reaction to one (knock on wood) and have read it is a myth that you can get sick from it, but I figure it didn't become a rampant rumor without some people getting sick from something right after the flu shot.  I know if you're allergic to eggs that you shouldn't get a traditional flu shot.

  • I'm very pro-vax. I will be getting the flu shot (again), as will my son. I think the benefits far outweigh the risks.

  • I get one every year since I work in healthcare.  I got mine 3 days ago.  You can't get sick from the Flu shot since it is not a live vaccine.  Getting the shot is way better than getting the flu (i can tell you that from experience).  In addition, even though it is safe in pregnancy, I would rather get it out of the way beforehand since I wouldn't feel comfortable with putting any new meds in my body while pregnant.
