I nurse with a cover in public nearly every day since I have a nearly three year old. This is the first child I've nursed and I expected people to gawk in public, but it's hilarious because it's as if I suddenly become invisible once I put that cover over my head. People go to great lengths to look anywhere but at me. Lol. The only hawkers are small children and they always get ushered away urgently by their Moms.

Re: When you NIP, do people gawk or ignore?
That's funny because I get the complete opposite!
People glance, then look away, then glance again...rinse and repeat. They especially love to watch as I try to switch baby from one side to the other, or when I take her out to burp her. It's almost like they want to sneek a peek of the nips. Ha!
I very rarely use a cover, and I very rarely used one with DD1 either (and she nursed until 22 months).
I only ever got positive feedback. I never noticed people going out of their way to stare or ignore.
I did, however, have a little old lady buy me a bottle of water when I was nursing at the mall once. She told me that when she nursed her babies, she was always thirsty...so she wanted to make sure I had enough water too.
umm,
I haven't tried yet.
I'm the one that would probably be awkward about it & make it really obvious that I am uncomfortable. surely some day I will HAVE to do it. I keep a cover with me in case but I usually head home or offer DD a bottle while we're out if she's hungry.
That is so sweet!
AWWW! that little old lady ROCKS! i too get crazy thirsty while nursing

I've only had one sort of awkward encounter- I had been talking with a girl in a mall food court about our babies. After I ate, DS decided it was his turn, so I obliged. The girl never looked back at me. I figured she wasn't a fan- not a big deal. A little later I seen her walking around with her baby nursing. I kinda made this face
If DH is with me, I almost always use my cover. He doesn't like when I don't (It took him a little while to be comfortable with me nursing in public with it).
For the most part, I'll see people look and then look away or give a little smile. It wouldn't bother me either way, though. If DS is hungry, I'm going to feed him.
Oh yeah!! I think BF moms should get a free camelbak from their insurance companies! LOL!
