I'm going in for my yearly physical / pre-conception check-up thingythis week, and I would like to go in prepared with questions - only
problem being, I've never been good at coming up with good questions for
a doctor visit. ![]()
Are there any general things I should be asking my doctor about? Or questions you wish you had asked your doctor when you went in for your first visit?
Questions I'm going to ask so far:
- what to do about the medications I'm on
- risk of PPD (already have depression)
- whether she recommends a specific PNV (already Target generic)
Another thing I'm for sure asking about is whether the the Gyn thinks I should be charting or not. I asked my PCP about charting, and she thought that since babymaking should be 'an enjoyable experience', I should wait until my husband and I have tried for six months before I start charting. I'm not completely sold on that though... especially since PCP was also all, 'besides, if you ovulate on day 14 it's not a problem!' and I had to try really, really hard not to give her the side eye.
Did anyone wait to chart on advice from their PCP?
Re: Questions to ask the OB/GYN? (repost from GP)
For most of us, the preconception appt consisted of our doc saying, "have fun, have sex, and come see me if you're not pregnant in a year." A lot of us have found that OBGYNs are not as knowledgable about issues with cycles - like your PCP - as you'd think. If I'd followed my OB's advice ("have sex every other day from CD 10-16") I would have been up a creek, as I don't ovulate until CD19+. You're going to have to do a lot of self education and take the cycle related stuff with a grain of salt. I've seen probably a 50/50 split on OBs who are temping/charting-friendly. Do it if it's right for you. Trust me, sex is an enjoyable act. Charting is just a tool to help you confirm ovulation and uncover issues with your cycle.
Definitely welcome if you're going to stick around, read the newbie link and TCOYF, and check out fertilityfriend and it's tutorials if you haven't already. You sound pretty knowledgable already, so kudos and good luck.

I had my pap, IUD removal and "family planning" appointment all at the same time about 2 weeks ago. I brought in a long list of questions and my OB kind of laughed at them. I read a few off of my list and she basically said "we don't like to limit pregnant woman, just go on your normal life, reduce caffeine to 2 cups a day, no alcohol, and you should be fine." I wasn't a huge fan of her nonchalant approach. Anyways, here are a few questions off my list and her answers:
-Can I play in full contact intramural sports (broomball/soccer) while TTC? Yes, you can play in any sports until you are 20 weeks.
-What prenatal vitamin should I take? She said any kind that says prenatal on it.
-Do I have weight restrictions when I get KU? No, you can lift as much as you want.
-Should I continue to work out? I work out 3 times a week. Yes, you should up it to 6 times a week, an hour each time.
-Can I eat lunch meat? Yes, just heat it first. You can let it cool in the fridge and eat it cold the next day.
I can't think of any others but she basically didn't seem too worried to warn me about anything or offer advice on TTC. She liked that I temp and use OPKs though.
