FF: Poll

I have a new theory, I want to know if it's correct. So help me out:

How many times a day does your LO eat? How many oz are they taking? Are they STTN? If yes, how many hours?

Re: FF: Poll

  • 5 or 6 times a day @ 6oz each.

    Yes, he is sleeping through night.  8:30pm - 6:00am (weekdays), 8:30pm - 7:45ish (weekends)

     What's your theory?

  • 4X per day, 6 oz per feeding with cereal

Sleeps 11 hours per night.  DS is unusual; he has STTN since 2 wks old.

  • 2-6oz bottles and 3-4 4oz bottles.  She does sttn from 930-630 during the week and on the weekends we get up around 930.  I am curious what your theory is too.

My DD is not STTN. She will only take a 4oz bottle X 7 times a day(including night time bottles) That is about 25 oz on average per day(she doesn't usually finish). For her age she should be getting between 30-36 oz a day. If we try CIO or anyother sleep training to get her to STTN she will drop to 19 oz a day(average).

So I think dropping the night feedings aren't an option right now Crying

  • She's now moved to a 4-hour routine.

Today was her first day taking, 3- 8 oz bottles and 1- 6 oz bottle.  That gets her to her usual 30ish.  (we just dropped the dreamfeed, hence the 4 hour routine)

    STTN: 7:30-7

Have you tried to give more before bed?  The 2 6oz bottle DD gets are first thing in the morning and the last one at night.  Once we started this she seems to sleep longer and it also helps her get to the extra oz she needs

  • I would happily give her a bigger bottle before bed...she won't take it. She refuses to take more than 4 oz almost ever. Once in a blue moon she'll down 5 oz, but it's been about a dozen times since birth. Uggg...mommy needs sleep!!

  • He gets 5 bottles total.  All are 6 oz except for the last one of the day, which is 7 oz.  I also give him cereal with his morning and evening bottle.  He has been sleeping from around 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. until about 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. since 8 weeks.
  • DS eats between 6-8 ounces about 5 times a day. 6 or 7 is about average-his nighttime bottle is usually 8.

He sleeps 10-12 hours at night and has since he was about 2 months old.

What if you slowly started weaning the oz. she gets in the MOTN? Go slow, start with one feed, then the other.  I'm serious. This is precisely how we just dropped the DF (same with DD). Decrease in 1-2 oz increments. In her case, I'd go from 4 for 2 nights, to 3 for 2 nights, to 2 for 2 nights to 0. Then try to soothe her or do PU/PD if she wakes during that time. (and I suggest buying The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems)

She should start eating more during the day as this process continues.

The other thing I might recommend is actually starting a dreamfeed NOW.  That might help get her more calories before she just wakes up.

  • One more thing... are you still putting rice in her bottles? Do you really believe this is helping? Because I tend to believe it can hinder this process and cause a lot of tummy issues in young babies.  Just a thought.

  • 5 oz. about every three hours (5/6 times).  She does not consistently STTN.  If I am lucky she will sleep from 8:30/9 until sometime between 1 and 5 and then wont get up until 7:30/8.  She has SSTN three times (I consider STTN when I don't have to get up to feed until a reasonable time in the morniung), but those were flukes I think.

  • We're already up to 8 oz at a time, every four hours during the day. He basically sleeps 9-6 and that started around 3.5 months. Straight through about half the time and waking up for one additional bottle the other half. No cereal.

  • LO takes 5-6 ounces about every three hours. I'm trying to feed him a bit more in order to space out our feedings a bit, but he really likes three hours.

  • LO takes about 5 oz every three hours. She eats six bottles a day. She falls asleep around eight and I give her the last bottle around 10:30 while she is sleeping. She?s been STTN for about two months now.

Elisbu, I'm in the same situation as you.  DS won't take more than 4 oz at once and he isn't sleeping through the night either.  His longest stretches of sleep are 4 to 5 hours.  I'm dying from the lack of sleep and struggling to function at work.  Yesterday I was pumping at work and fell asleep.

  • 7-8 oz. 4 x per day.  She sleeps from about 8pm - 6:30am (because we wake her up then.)  We just started cereal this week.

  • DD hasn't had a night time feeding since she was a few weeks.  She gets 5 bottles.  The first 4 are 5 oz, and the bedtime is 6 oz.  She STTN typically 7:30-6:30.

  • 5-6 5oz bottles, STTN 8pm-6am.

I just stopped feeding DD when she woke up in the night and was surprised that she went back to sleep without a problem. That made her more hungry in the morning and she always drinks a big bottle first thing.

  • Abby drinks 5 bottles that range from 5 to 7 ozs ~ she drinks about 28 oz/day.  She is not STTN and since trying to take away the 2 am bottle 3 weeks ago, she wakes up and goes back to sleep every hour starting around 2 am.  Sleep training did not work.  We are going to start cereal this weekend and if that doesn't help, I'll brink back the 2 am bottle.

She has only STTN about 4 times.

ETA: I'd rather have (2) 5 hours stretches of sleep with a bottle in between than waking up multiple times to give a pacifier.

  • Izzy takes 5-6 bottles (lately a solid 6 due to sleep regression I believe) that are usually 5 oz each. We're toying with upping a few of her daily bottles to 6 oz (though she seems to spit up a bit more when we go that route so I don't know that's it's going to work) and trying to reduce her nightly bottles from 5 to 4 oz in hopes of pushing the eating all to daytime and letting her (and us) get more solid sleep at night. We just started introducing some rice cereal once a day between bottles in the early evening. No sleeping through the night here, especially lately. She used to sleep from 7ish until 5ish (sometimes until 6 or 7 even) but about 2 weeks ago, that went out the window and she'll wake up sometimes at 12/1ish and then again at about 4/5ish.

  • Usually six times/day.  IDK when she nurses (obviously), but pumped bottles these days are usually 4-5 oz.  No, she wakes once to eat.  Goes down around 7p, wakes between 1a and 3a to eat, and the sleeps until 700-800a, sometimes a little longer like 8:30-8:45.

  • Lydia takes 5-6 6oz bottles per day, with an evening cereal feeding. She still isn't STTN. She wakes any where from 1-3 am for another 6 oz feeding, and she finishes it (or a good 3/4 of it).

Thanks for feedback everyone. I think right now we are going to work on upping the daytime bottles(trying to get to at least 5oz- 6 would be awesome!), and then after she masters that,  we'll cut back on the night time bottles.

Lisa-No we dont add rice anymore. Since she started soilds we stick to just fruits and veggies with very little oatmeal.
