Second time moms with boys- circumcision question

If you circumcised your DS, who performed the procedure? Would my current pedi (for DD) do it? Does the hospital have a specialist? I know there is a lot of controversy on the topic, but as we were discussing a decision I just wondered who would even do the procedure.

Re: Second time moms with boys- circumcision question

  • The pedi on call at the time will do it for us (if it's a boy). I'm fairly sure we could ask for someone specific but I'm comfortable with all the pedis in our clinic (which luckily services the hospital). People who don't use this clinic have to specify who they want to do it.

  • My son wasn't circumcised, but I know for both of my nephews - the pediatrician at the hospital did theirs.  I'm sure you could take your son to his pediatrician after he leaves the hospital to have the procedure done. We were told if we changed our mind we had a few weeks (possibly a month?) where DS could have it done without having to be put under a general anesthesia.

  • My OB did it.  We had our son circumcised since we knew from 18 week ultrasound that he had hydronephrosis -an issue with the kidney systems that leads to an increase likelihood in urinary tract infections.  So circumcision was highly recommended.
  • Our OB did ours. I think it might depend on if your OB is also a surgeon? Some are and some aren't, regardless though I know not all OBs do circumcisions.

I had a friend that had their pediatrician do it, about a week or so after they got home from the hospital. It was much cheaper for them to have an in-office visit vs. a hospital procedure (we decided we didn't care about cost), so another thing to think about. Personally, I'd much rather have it done while in the hospital if possible, as it kind of sucked (he was not happy afterwards).

  • When DS was born, it was actually one of the doctor's from my OB office. A male, think maybe he was the specialist.....

  • At my hospital, if you've declared a pediatrician, they do it.  If you haven't chosen a pediatrician the on call doc does it. This makes a big difference at our hospital because there are two methods of performing the procedure and some prefer one method over the other.  Also, some docs will use sugar water or topical creams and others don't.  Check with your hospital for sure.
  • My husband who is a surgeon let our pedi do it. He said if we had another boy he would also let the urologist do it.
  • I have four boys and two were circ'd by the OB and two by the pedi.  The OB did a better job.  Had to have one of my boys re-circ'd by a urologist after the pedi screwed it up.  If I have another boy, I may just go straight to the urologist.

  • My OB did it, he was born at 1am and he did it at about 7am. My one tip, is pull it back for the first year and lubricate it with a&d or something greasy! It is so easy to have it readhere, and it sucks when you have to break the skin again. Either that or my son is a super fast healer! Our OB did a great job on the circ though.

  • Wow. Thanks for all the feedback. I never even thought about OB. My OB is an excellent surgeon... I will ask at next appt!

  • Firsts DS hispedi did it the day after he was born. With DS #2 my OB did when he was 2days old.

  • My OB circ'd my first son at the hospital a day or so after he was born.  There are new regulations now so I was given information that indicates after DS #2 is a week old (to establish eating, allow for full ped testing, etc.), we will have to take him to an out patient surgical center where the OB will perform the circ.

  • Our OB did it for us, but he is also a Mohel (Jewish person trained to perform circumsisions during a Bris - we are not Jewish so he just did it in the hospital the day after DS was born, though). I think in other circumstances the pedi does it.

  • We had our DS circumsized in the hospital the day after he was born. The hospital pedi who does rounds did it. It was the same pedi that came to see our 2.5 year old daughter was born. My son is now 12 weeks old.
  • Our pediatrician did it while we were still in the hospital.  I know some hospitals have staff pediatricians, but at ours the pedi from the clinic comes in and does rounds (and circumcisions).

  • A lot of it is geographcial.  I know one ob who trained in CA and she said that all the pedis there did the circ.  Here in the Northeast all the OBs do the circs.  Traditionally it is the OB who does the circ because they are trained as surgeons, and pedis are not.  Many urologists do not know how to do circs on fresh newborns because it is a different set of equipment from what they normally use.  I know one guy who as a urology resident, wanted to do the circ on his son (to be born), so ended up being taught by the OBs how to do it.

  • My OB did it the day he was born.  I wondered as soon as I found out I was having a boy and asked my OB.  I was glad to hear that he uses numbing cream, too.

  • It totally depends on the state you live in and what the policies are. My OBGYN did my son's circ. and I didn't have the option to have the pedi on call to do it. The sad thing is that my OBGYN didn't take off enough skin, and my son had to be recircumcised at 12 months :( It was horrible. I've known quite a few people that this has happened to!

    Good luck with your decision!

  • My OB did it for us right before we left the hospital after his birth.  I asked ahead of time if he was the one who would do it and how many he has done in the past (lol).  He said it was routine for him so I just decided to go along with that.  I felt more comfortable having it done in the hospital before we left vs a couple of weeks later in the pedi's office.  My pedi is affiliated at a different hospital than the one I deliver at.  So if I were to choos to do it at the hosp. then it would either be an on call pedi or my OB.  I don't want someone on call that I don't know cutting my son's penis.

I trusted my OB to do it more than my Pedi anyway and I have no reason for that other than my gut feeling.  You can also hire a Mohel (specialist) to do it for you as well.  DH and I were looking into that but ultimately decided to let the OB do it (good decision so far).

If you have friends with the same OB or Pedi and they have little boys -- ask about their kid's circumsision and whether or not they reccomend that OB or Pedi for this.

    Good luck.

  • We had the hospital call our pediatrician and he came in and did it and also did his first health screening. That is what is typically done at our hospital, I don't know if there is an staff or on-call pedi or not. I would be sure it's someone in your network.

Also check that the group doing the hearing screening is in your network. We got a lot of resistance from the hospital staff for even asking and got the run around when we contacted the company - turns out they don't take ANY insurance and it was really costly. We'll skip the hearing screening this time and have it done by someone in our network.

  • The OB does it for us.  She actually asked me at my appt this week if we wanted it done (which we do), and told me that they are the ones who do the procedure.

  • Our pediatrician did it in hosp, after a couple days.  FWIW, I taught daycare for 13 years(most in infant room), and of the 5 or so boys that were uncirc, TWO of them had to have it done as toddlers, bc of severe repeated infections, etc.  One of them spent two weeks in the hospital with kidney infections.  And I have seen several studies that support the fact that it does decrease chances of STD's, unless he has PERFECT USE of condoms(not likely).  LOL;0)

  • Contrary to common belief, the foreskin cannot be pulled back (retracted) in almost all newborn babies. Parents do not need to try cleaning under the foreskin until it has become fully retractable of its own accord because attempts to pull back a non-retractable foreskin can result in pain and possibly injury. California Gov. Jerry Brown has authorized a bill - AB 768 - that will make it a crime for local governments to stand against boy circumcision. AB 768 is but one of several bills that approved Brown's desk a few days ago, reports the Los Angeles Times. One bill levies stiffer charges for the sale of artificial weed.
