If you circumcised your DS, who performed the procedure? Would my current pedi (for DD) do it? Does the hospital have a specialist? I know there is a lot of controversy on the topic, but as we were discussing a decision I just wondered who would even do the procedure.
Re: Second time moms with boys- circumcision question
Our OB did ours. I think it might depend on if your OB is also a surgeon? Some are and some aren't, regardless though I know not all OBs do circumcisions.
I had a friend that had their pediatrician do it, about a week or so after they got home from the hospital. It was much cheaper for them to have an in-office visit vs. a hospital procedure (we decided we didn't care about cost), so another thing to think about. Personally, I'd much rather have it done while in the hospital if possible, as it kind of sucked (he was not happy afterwards).
When DS was born, it was actually one of the doctor's from my OB office. A male, think maybe he was the specialist.....
It totally depends on the state you live in and what the policies are. My OBGYN did my son's circ. and I didn't have the option to have the pedi on call to do it. The sad thing is that my OBGYN didn't take off enough skin, and my son had to be recircumcised at 12 months
It was horrible. I've known quite a few people that this has happened to!
Good luck with your decision!
My OB did it for us right before we left the hospital after his birth. I asked ahead of time if he was the one who would do it and how many he has done in the past (lol). He said it was routine for him so I just decided to go along with that. I felt more comfortable having it done in the hospital before we left vs a couple of weeks later in the pedi's office. My pedi is affiliated at a different hospital than the one I deliver at. So if I were to choos to do it at the hosp. then it would either be an on call pedi or my OB. I don't want someone on call that I don't know cutting my son's penis.
I trusted my OB to do it more than my Pedi anyway and I have no reason for that other than my gut feeling. You can also hire a Mohel (specialist) to do it for you as well. DH and I were looking into that but ultimately decided to let the OB do it (good decision so far).
If you have friends with the same OB or Pedi and they have little boys -- ask about their kid's circumsision and whether or not they reccomend that OB or Pedi for this.
Good luck.
Same here!
We had the hospital call our pediatrician and he came in and did it and also did his first health screening. That is what is typically done at our hospital, I don't know if there is an staff or on-call pedi or not. I would be sure it's someone in your network.
Also check that the group doing the hearing screening is in your network. We got a lot of resistance from the hospital staff for even asking and got the run around when we contacted the company - turns out they don't take ANY insurance and it was really costly. We'll skip the hearing screening this time and have it done by someone in our network.
