lurker ? - Flea Control

I found a couple of flea in our house about a month ago and then again today. We put advantx on the dogs but I don't feel comfortable using that with LO in the house and her touching the dogs.

So my question is - What natural/safe flea control do you use for your dogs?

Re: lurker ? - Flea Control

  • We still advantix on the cats, but I use a mix of baking soda/salt on our carpets. Mix equal parts of BS and salt (start with 1 cup each). Use a colander to sprinkle it on carpets, couches, etc. Then use a broom to sweep it deeper into carpets. After a few days vacuum it up. It dries out the fleas and eggs. Good luck!

So do you still let the baby play on the carpet with that stuff on it?

  • You can also use Borax--but not around the baby! (Sprinkle it, let it sit, vacuum it up, then it's baby-safe.) Daily Vacuuming is your friend. If that doesn't work, use diatomaceous earth (it's a clay that dries up the fleas).
  • I am not concerned for her safety to play on it, but I don't let her. She's in a phase of putting everything in her mouth and I know the salt/BS combo isn't a tasty one. I found this recipe by Googling "natural flee remedies."

Where do you put her for the few days you let it sit?

  • bumbo, high chair, etc. our house isn't all carpet - only the bedrooms. in the case of a home with more carpet I would do one room at a time, so there was always a room for her to be in. she can still sleep in a room if i am treating it.

Ok, that makes more sense. Thank You for your input and help :)

I second this. It works quickly and keeps the fleas at bay for a long time (for me, usually 6-12 months).

  • If you use diatomaceous earth be sure to wear a mask.  It can be dangerous if inhaled.
  • Talk to your vet- there is a new edible flea med that works amazingly, and is non- toxic. My vet said something that they were trying to get certified organic. I think it's called spinosad.

    That would be awesome! Thanks!
