So we were going to tell our girls about the baby after our NT scan yesterday, just so we were more sure things are looking good (they are). But this weekend, DD#1 (3 years old) figured it out on her own. Here is how it went down:
We were playing and DD was grabbing my belly, she stopped and looked at me very seriously and said "mommy, your belly is big". I said that it was, and what did she think it was. She said she thought it was a baby. I said she was right. She asked to see the baby. I lifted my shirt and showed her my belly but said she wouldn't be able to see the baby until it was bigger since it was still in my belly and had to grow more. She then ran to DH and said happily "daddy, mommy has a baby in her belly". She then proceeded to say she wanted a brother and only a brother (no pressure there). Since then, every day she has asked if the baby is big enough yet and then yesterday, she asked to see the baby pictures (from our u/s). So that was nice that she so interested in the baby, although she has since said she will not be helping with diapers or feeding the baby and that only maybe, she'll play with the baby sometimes.
DD#2, at 16 months is still clueless of course, but maybe will get it as we get closer to March.
