At what age are they able to start to understand to clean up after themselves? And what techniques do you use to help teach them?

    DS is 17 months and knows how to "put toys away". I'm pretty sure he picked it up from watching me.

    If I am home at night, before we read his bedtime story, we pick up his toys and they go down for night night. I am the only person (at home) that does this so I don't know how effective it is.

    I started around 18 months having DS help me clean up and now at nearly 20 months he totally gets it. He doesn't do it on his own, but if I ask him to help me (and be very specific) then he does.

    ETA: the only thing I make him help clean up are his toys at the end of the day.
