2nd Trimester

Choroid Plexus Cysts

Hi everyone, I know I'm not the only one who's posted about this, but I'm starting to flip out. I have been really good at internalizing everything until now, but I just got the call from the U/S specialist to set our appointment for our level 2 ultrasound.

At our 20 week anatomy scan the doc told us there were some CPCs, but everything else looked normal. She gave us the choice between having another U/S there, or getting referred to a specialist, and told us not to worry. My background is in science, I'm a very analytical thinker...so when I researched it I decided the odds were in our favor and we wouldn't worry...and I called to say we would take the second ultrasound at her office, no specialist necessary.

Now I'm 26 weeks and at my appointment last week I had to meet with the nurse practitioner, because my doc was scheduled for surgery. She called right after I got back to my office and said my doc wanted us to see the specialist, even though everything else was normal, just to be sure.

I'm kind of frustrated because she seems to have 'changed her mind' but didn't tell us why. We didn't do any NT or first trimester testing...we are trying to do this with as little intervention as possible, so to speak. Our thoughts are that we are dealt the hand we are dealt, and even if something had shown up on the NT or a CV sampling, we would have gone ahead, and with all of the false positives I have heard about we decided we'd rather just let nature do its thing, or 'let go and let God'.

Even if something is wrong, Downs or trisomy 18, we will love him and do everything we can to make his life as full as it can be (yes I know what trisomy 18 is, we can leave that where it lies...) but now that the appointment is a few days away I'm starting to flip out...talking to my mom didn't help...she kinda flipped out too. She isn't exactly the best person to go to for support in difficult situations. So, here I am pouring my heart out to you ladies!  Just couldn't keep it in anymore...

Re: Choroid Plexus Cysts

  • I don't have any experience to offer you but I hope everything is OK!

I have read about a few ladies on this board who have had this finding at their A/S and it sounds like that without other markers, this usually is nothing at all.

Good Luck and keep us posted!!

  • I am a radiologist and I just wanted to give you a couple of little encouraging factoid from one of my text books from residency re: choroid plexus cysts...I thought these might appeal to you especially given your background in science

"Choroid plexus cysts are found in 0.5% of fetuses. Aneuploidy (most commonly trisomy 18) is found in of these 1-2% fetuses, especially if there are additional risk factors such as advanced maternal age or additional sonongraphic abnormalities".

     Good luck :-)

  • Phew...thanks. That actually makes me feel a lot better...we aren't in any risk group (family history or age)...

  • Update!

We had our second ultrasound last week--the specialist says all is well. She did confirm that with no other markers the link between CPCs and genetic disorders is not statistically signficant--basically said if the CPCs were a marker for Trisomy 18 there would be very significant other markers present, like fused third and fourth fingers, etc.

Lots of stress over nothing at all--but we did get some very cool 3D ultrasound pictures out of the deal :-)
