Cruising w/ a baby- what was I thinking?!

We are going on a huge family cruise (on Carnival) in a few weeks and I'm starting to panic.  I didn't know that babies aren't allowed in the pool?!  WTH am I going to do with her all day?  I was planning on bringing a float and just wearing her out in the pool all day.  There is no way I'm letting her crawl around on deck- gross.  And she's not walking yet (although close!)  So how is she going to burn any energy?  She already struggles with sleeping away from home so I thought that the only way to make sure she sleeps is to really play hard all day.  But now, I'm really concerned.  Pushing her around the ship in her stroller just won't cut it.  She's an active girl!  The childcare program is for 2 years and up.  So basically one of us will be chained to the baby at all times?  Tell me what to expect?  Any other tips or tricks to save our sanity?

  • We are dealing with the same issue in Nov.  My DD will be 2, but as of now not potty trained.  We plan to get off at every port and head directly to the beach. I do not care how much it costs to get there, or how much shaded chairs are or what food costs!  I figure it is the only way to make it work.  Some of the Carnival ships have splash pads so maybe that will be an option.

  • What ship is it? They should have a water works area for kids, which is kind of like a splash park! I just got back from a cruise (my 2nd one with Caleb), and we lived at water works (and Camp Carnival, so Gavin will love that). But even though Caleb could get in the regular pool, I couldn't. The water was 4ft. 9in, and I could barely stay above water on my tippy toes, sometimes it sucks being short. lol! But Caleb preferred the kiddie water works area anyway, they had a little kiddie slide too that he went down 423 times! lol!

  • The disney cruise is the same way. Only potty trained in the pools but they had a smal splash area on the Wonder. Of course for us it was to cold.

I just used lots of hand sanitizer and let Bryce crawl around on deck or in the main areas. It was seriously the only thing we could do on our disney cruise. They did let us take him into one of the clubs but we had to stay with him the whole time. And even through we had family with us it was still all on us especially since Bryce didn't want anyone else but dh or I.

The good part is at least you will be where it is warm and you can go outside more then we could. Take some small toys with you so they have something to do in the room and on the decks. We had a few small balls and cars plus Bailey's travel thomas the train thing. It helped to keep them occupied while we were getting ready for dinner.

It's the Fascination.  It does look like it has a splash pad, so that makes me feel a little better.  But still, I'm totally freaked out about letting her crawl around there.  My uncle is coming along- he works for CDC and he's always so quick to tell me what kinds of nastiness I'm exposing my children to- lol.  It skeeves me out but Daisy, I think you're right, I'm gonna have to bust out the hand sanitizer and deal.  And yes, we are only doing the beach- no other excursions.  I figured that would be the simplest thing.  That will definitely help wear her out on those days.  I'm sure Gavin is going to have a blast- my 4 year old niece will also be there and those 2 are inseperable.  But Sophie... I don't know.  I like to think that we are pretty well travelled, even with kids in tow, but I gotta admit, I'm really feeling in over my head with this one.  DH and I are each taking half a day to ourselves and the other one will take Sophie.  That way we each get some guaranteed down time.  Then whenever any other relatives want to steal her, that's just a bonus.  I know this isn't going to be a trip for us to relax... this is a trip where we will work our fricking butts off!  But that's ok- we will still have fun!

  • We went on Carnival Dream with Eli and I just put him in the pool anyway. Nobody said anything. It was fine. BUT, I have to say....Carnival was the worst cruise line to choose for a kid under 2. They offered NOTHING for him to do and teh baby-sitting was only offered after 10pm. It sucked. Big time. I wish we had done RC or Disney. Carnival is great though if your LO is over 2.

I've read other reviews about the baby in the pool thing, so I might give it a shot.  As long as she poops first and she's in a swim diaper- I don't see the problem.  I knew about the babysitting after 10.  That's worthless to me... like I could ever stay awake past 10 myself!  I definitely would have picked a Disney Cruise, but this is about 25 people going and Disney was too expensive- especially for those w/o kids (which is the majority of the group).  So we'll deal with it.  But I'm really hoping to do a Disney cruise next!

Yes, Disnay was way too expensive for us! We could really only afford Carnival. And we had fun, I just wish they had had a little more to offer for under 2. I'm with you - after 10 was way too late for us! And I figured the same as you - he had a swim diaper on and I kept checking him. It really wasn't a big deal. I figured plead ignorant and ask for forgiveness if they said something, lol!
