It seems like all doctors have a different policy, but my doctor said as long as both twins were head down, I could deliver vaginally. Luckily, they cooperated and I had a very easy delivery. It was actually an easier delivery/recovery than it was with my singleton.
Yay!!! That makes me feel so much better. I know that twins were born at our hospital the weekend I found out we were having twins and they came vaginally. I just haven't seen it on the board.
Thanks...although, I know I have a long way to go.

I did end up with a c/s BUT was told it's entirely possible, if not encouraged per my MFM, to try for a vaginal delivery of twins....mine repositioned to where he thought it was safest to convert to a c/s after induction but had they stayed heads down and been able to descend ok, I would have had a vaginal.
If it's important to you to try to do a vaginal delivery, clearly discuss and voice this to your dr. Some have different policies. Initially, mine said as long as I was in labor by 38weeks but then once that day came and LOs were still inside, they just heavily monitored me and let me stay pg until my induction. Some will only do a vag for 2 vertex but some drs will do a breech extraction if necessary....
I had mine vaginally after 2 previous vaginal deliveries. If your twins are head-down, I imagine your doc will tell you that you're a great candidate for another vaginal delivery. Our twins both came out face-up and were still easier to deliver than our 9 lb. boys ; )

My OB will only do vaginal delivery if both twins are vertex. My MFM will do vaginal delivery as long as twin A is vertex - regardless of position of B. Unfortunately both twins are breech, so it is looking like c/s for me. Too bad since I had my 8 pound 13 ounce singleton vaginally and didn't even tear.

Vag here too! Even though they were so preemie! Our MDs would have done a breech extraction as well if B had been breech, but A was head down. They required that I deliver in the OR with a team scrubbed in in case something went awry and they needed to do an emergency C

my MFM lets his patients attempt vaginal as long as baby A is vertex. he will do a breech extraction if baby B starts off breech or flips once baby A is out.
since both of my babies are vertex, i am scheduled for an induction at 38w1d!

I also delivered my two singletons vaginally and a cesarean scares me too. Ultimately whatever gets my babies out safely, I will be ok with but would love to be able to do it vaginally. My OB says as long as baby A is vertex and both tolerate labor, I can attempt a vaginal delivery in the OR in case there is a need for an emergency csection.

Nationally, 50% of twins are delivered vaginally and of the 50% who aren't, that includes elective C-sections, so you have a pretty decent chance of being able to deliver vaginally if that's what you would like. (I was like you; I was really hoping to deliver vaginally and would only do a C-section if it were medically necessary.)
I switched practices during my pregnancy. At the first practice, the OBs would only deliver vaginally if both twins were head-down but the (more experienced) MFM was willing to do it as long as Baby A was head-down. At the practice I ended up with, my OB was on board as long as Baby A was head-down. That worked out well b/c both babies were head-down when my induction started but Baby B flipped at some point so the OB did end up doing a breech extraction.
I did not, but it's not impossible. The statistics are 50/50. I had two breech babies so I had to have a section. If you end up with a c-section, it's not the end of the world. My recovery was very easy.
If my girls had been vaginal deliveries, I'd be attempting a vaginal delivery as well.
I have seen a few of vaginal twin deliveries on the Discovery channel baby shows and in Nat Geo's In the Womb: Multiples documentary, so it is possible.
FWIW, I had easy recoveries with my c/s and didn't have any complications. GL!

I did - my OB would do vaginal if Baby A was head down and bigger. My Baby B was bigger, but she was also head down, so I was given the go-ahead. Good luck!
my OB will let me deliver vaginally as long as both babies are head down, if baby b turns they will do a c sec for him. unfortunatley until the day labor starts theres no way to know if babies will be head down. mine have been for months but it could still change they told me.

I'm an FTM, and I was able to deliver my twins vaginally at almost 39 weeks. They were both head down. After 13.5 hours of labor I pushed A out in 20 minutes, and B came along 8 minutes later. They had to use a vaccum on Baby B because her heart rate dropped into the 60's once A came out. But she came out fine! The worst part for me was the fact that the placentas didn't come out in one piece and I had to have a D&C after my epidural had worn off. Ouch!
My twins are mo/di and my OB said she will not deliver mo/di twins vaginally. So it is a definite c-section for me. I don't know if all doctors are like this. When I asked her why, she said its because it can be very complicated when they are sharing a placenta, so she just always does a c-section with mo/di (identical) twins. I'm sure there's someone on this board with mo/di twins who delivered vaginally, but for my OB, it's c-section only.
Yes, I also had 2 previous vaginal births with my daughters. My twin boys were induced also and at 36 wks. both babies were head down. I had a very smooth vaginal twin delivery so it can be done. Most likely you will be in the OR in case of the need for a emergency c-section. My Dr. held baby b in place so he would not flip and did not break his water until he was being born to help avoid reasons for a section also. Also, my Dr. said all along as long as Baby A was head down we could try vaginally. Some Dr.'s want both babies to be head down though. Good luck to you!

It's definitely possible. My OB gave me the option of vag or c-sec. Both were head down, so I could have done either, but I didn't want to take the chance of baby B being in distress (prolapsed cord, placental abruption, Oxygen desats, etc).
I'm very happy I delivered c-section, I felt so much safer, and felt everything was more controlled. I would like to someday experience a vaginal delivery with a singleton.
Like everything there are pros and cons. I hope for your sake you can have the delivery you want (vaginal) and that your birth experience is wonderful.
I delivered my twins vaginally and baby b was breach...Every dr seems to have a different policy but I was lucky and my dr was very pro vaginal births for MoMs.

I had a wonderful vaginal delivery with my twins. The on-call doc was very open to me delivering that way, but I did have to deliver in the OR, just in case.
Both of my girls were head down, and I delivered at 37w4d.
