Lets talk about food restrictions!

Ok...so I am having an UBER hard time with food restrictions.

First off....I don't like being told what to do ...hahaha and second, I don't eat processed dairy at all. All the cheese and such in my house is raw. This was a surprise pregnancy so I was not prepared for all the changes.

I also eat a lot of raw fish...especially tuna... I love undercooked meat and I love cured meats like salami and prosciutto ....

Are there any foods you are going to keep eating even tho they are on the NO NO list?? I mean, there are other cultures that live on these foods that we say are bad....what do they do??

How can I spend 9 months without cheese or sushi!??!

Re: Lets talk about food restrictions!

  • I live in Maryland so the cutting back on seafood thing is difficult. But at least I won't be pregnant over the summer when it's prime crab season!

I'm also REALLY pouting over this no-milkshake thing. Booo-urns.

  • I don't like sushi, so that one's easy for me.

I do enjoy my morning coffee, but have switched to decaf and have switched from splenda to sugar.

I still eat fish, but limit it to once a week.  Same with lunch meat.  I'm not a huge fan of lunch meat, so that's not that big of a sacrifice either but if I want a ham and turkey sandwich, I'll have one.

Just try to find a substitute, especially for the cheese.  As long as it's pasturized it's fine.  For the most part, I think as long as you aren't eating something like that everyday, you're probably ok.

  • Well, not too sure what you can do about the raw food. But if you want to eat salami you can put it in the microwave for a few seconds until it steams (pretty sure I read that on the food safety site). That should kill the bacteria :)

  • I only follow the no raw fish and unpasturized cheese rules. Everything else is fine in moderation, IMO.

  • My dr said to avoid unpasturized cheese, raw fish, and mystery meat.

So my diet hasn't changed much except for the sushi part.  Lunch meat is fine as long as you're smart about it.

He said first tri diet isn't as important as second tri so try not to worry so much.

I am going to cry over the milkshake thing if my sweet tooth ever comes back! Since being pregnant I have totally lost my craving for sweets. Its rather annoying actually....my guy is buying sweets assuming I will go nuts for them and they smell gross to me! hahaha

  • I feel for you.  I'm not digging the food restrictions either did stop buying raw milk from my neighbor when I found out though, and have switched back to buying pasteurized from the store.  I'm bummed for the spring though, because I have goats and they will kid in March, I'm planning to pasteurize their milk.  I have wrestled with it, but really it just gives me peace of mind.  It will be a major pain in the ass to add another step to milking though.

  • I am going to "die" without sushi for nine months. I also love to have seared ahi tuna but will have to do without that as well I guess.

I like my meat medium rare, and will probably continue to order it that way.

I don't eat a ton of lunchmeat so I guess I will probably just try to order something else instead. I also don't like runny eggs so I fine with that restriction. I do love herbal teas though so to cut back to just green, black, and chai is interesting.

  • I don't eat sushi or unpasteurized cheese. I warm cold cuts up. It's really not that big of a deal.

  • Alright, someone spill it!

I've had a milkshake 2 days in a row.  NO LIE.  I can't think of why I shouldn't have though.  Milk, Vanilla, Ice Cream, Malt Flavor.  Done.  Made at home.

What about nuts though, can we have nuts?

  • I am with you - I definitly crave the "restricted" foods and coffee.. OMG, I want coffee so bad.  Sometimes i just sniff the package for ten minutes, that's how much I miss coffee.  I also ate raw fish sushi twice a week, lunch meat, and a lot of medium-rare meat.

So obviously raw fish and medium-rare meat are out.  I still have sushi but only the cooked kind.  It's not ideal, but DH knows already that for my push present, he is to deliver a large sushi boat and a venti latte with a shot of espresso right to the delivery room :-) Nuking lunch meat is out, I've had no morning sickness at all so far but eating a piece of warm lunch meat out of the m/w might just do it.  On suggestion I read here, I toast my sandwiches in a toaster oven which kills the bacteria, melts the cheese, and tastes really yummy.

So overall it isn't ideal, but then I remember how hard I had to work to get pregnant and the lure of these foods pales in comparison. It's only 9 months (7.5 left really) and I am so blessed to be pregnant at all, we were starting to think it wasn't going to happen.

I am so jealous of your ability to buy milk from your neighbor! My goodness...thats a raw dairy dream come true!

It is almost impossible to find raw milk here....but the cheeses are great.

theresat858 ...the reason I don't eat pasteurized dairy is because it makes me sick. =(  So most people can eat it but without the bacteria in the cheese, I can not process it. I am going to have to check out some goat cheeses and see if my tummy can handle them ^_^

  • I tend to lean to the liberal side of things when it comes to food restrictions.

I don't know a lot about raw milk/raw cheese, but I imagine you do, since you consume it. I think it's all about what you're comfortable with in that department. If you buy your milk/cheese from a place you feel is reputable and you feel comfortable with them, it might be okay to continue consuming it. I'd do some research on boards with more moms who eat raw milk products and see what they say (mothering.com might be a good place to check).

I'll continue to eat meats medium rare. I ate sushi a few times when I was pregnant with my son, and I had some shrimp sushi yesterday as a compromise. I imagine I'll likely eat sushi with raw fish in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, on occasion.

One thing I don't compromise on is the deli meat thing. I think it's fine to eat it if it has been heated, and if you're getting it fresh, but I don't think the risk of listeria from deli meat is worth it, to me. I don't eat a lot of deli meats anyway though, and I like hot sandwiches.

My doctor said a cup of coffee per day is fine, so that's what I'm doing. I love coffee, it makes me happy, so I'm drinking it.

The milkshake thing sounds like BS to me. I guess the implication was that soft serve ice cream is bad, which I'm not sure about. But if I go out for a milkshake, I like to get a good, real milkshake, not made from soft serve anyway. ;)

  • I'm mostly ok with the food restrictions for the most part.  What I really miss is wine.  :(  Not breaking that rule though...

What no milkshake thing?  I can't see any reason why a milkshake wouldn't be allowed... ice cream is allowed...milk is allowed..so mix them together...and suddenly it isn't allowed?

I've just never heard of that one, and it makes no sense. (Unless maybe in reference to fast food milkshakes that have been sitting in the mixer forever or something - but no reason at all you couldn't make one at home).

Regarding milkshakes, I think it is not a good idea to get milkshakes or soft serve from a restaurant because of issues with cleaning the machines. So yes, the ice cream/milkshake could have bacteria in it from sitting around, not being fresh.

It's such a bummer because I LOVE mint oreo shakes. LOVE.

  • I just did some reading up on it after a post about soft serve, and it seems legit because of listeria. So you can have homemade milkshakes, but not ones where they are made with soft serve ice cream.

  • Attn: Milkshakes!!

In a previous post on this board, someone mentioned that milkshakes and frozen yogurt are no-no's if they are processed through tubes and machines (like at fast food restaurants) when serving. Apparently the risk is in the bacteria that can grow in these machines and serving tubes that are harmful, not the yogurt and milk itself.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I hope it answers your milkshake questions!

  • The milkshake thing is baffling. Does not compute.

I miss coffee and beer the most, but those aren't really foods are they?

I don't eat a lot of sushi or deli meat, so those aren't hard. I eat a LOT of cheese and just make sure I buy pasteurized. My favorite goat cheese is still safe.

I've put a lot of self imposed restrictions (or at least that I am trying to avoid as much as possible, some situations are out of my control) that aren't necessarily widely prescribed like no HFCS, no artificial sweeteners, no MSG, and generally avoiding overly processed foods.

  • I usually do everything in moderation.  But soft serve and cold cuts are the only two things that I really don't eat.  I just can't guarantee that the places I get it from are clean.

But I still drink coffee if i want it (I'm not a big coffee drinker, but every now and then I want it)  I don't eat sushi, so that's no biggie for me.

  • Technically it said soft cheeses, even though I had some feta cheese on a salad at the restaurant a few weeks ago and didn't panic.

I'm a chocolate addict and with my hormones the way they are I'm not giving up chocolate...I'll just try to stay away from the super dark chocolate.

I had a sandwich with mayo and also didn't freak out, but I'll try to avoid it in the future.

  • I completed one pregnancy on raw milk, raw cheese and pastured eggs and meat from the farm.  Why would you deprive your body of the powerful antibodies and beneficial bacteria from raw milk and cheese and the wonderful fats that are present in pastured products and instrumental to your developing baby?  Why do you want to put dead milk, which likely contains soy and corn byproducts, in your and your baby's system?  Your risk of illness is higher from pasteurized milk than from raw milk!  Do the research.  The propaganda about the dangers of raw milk is fear-mongering driven by corporations who are seeing their profits shift from their poisoned, mass produced, hormone filled, dead milk, to local farms.  Don't buy into the insanity.  A good resource is www.realmilk.org.  And if you are worried about what your doc thinks, then dont' tell the doc you are drinking raw milk.  You know how your goats are raised and can test them for illness, why would you pasteurize food you raised yourself unless you had reason to believe it was not safe to drink?

My last pregnancy on raw milk and pastured eggs, resulted in a 9 lb 3 oz baby girl  who held her head at birth and a 5 lb very healthy placenta.  Nearly all of my weight gain was baby, placenta and water.  I credit the eggs and raw milk for that.  I drank raw milk thru BF and weaned her to raw milk.  She is nearly 3, articulate, smart, full of energy and wonderfully even-tempered (well, most of the time, she is nearly 3!).  I am pregnant again and plan to drink a gallon of raw milk per week with at least one dozen pastured eggs per week.  You must consume the healthiest sources of protein you can afford.  You need the wonderful antibodies present in raw milk.  Pasteurization kills them.  And, homogenization ruins the benefits dervied from the variety of fat in raw milk - with homogenized milk, your body absorbs the good AND bad fat.  Nonhomogenized milk results in the bad fats being too large for your system to absorb and they pass through.

Babies receive their gut flora from their mother during vaginal delivery.  True health and wellness starts in the gut.  Lacto-fermented fruits and veggies, raw milk yogurt and kefir, kefired water and juice, etc.  Keep your gut healthy and strong to give your baby the best possible start.

Most deli meats, hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats contain nitrates which must be avoided at all costs and should not have been consumed prior to pregnancy and should never be given to children.  If your diet consists of food from healthy, organic, natural sources, there should not be any noticeable "restrictions".  the problem is that the western diet is full of fake food, processed chemical laden food substitutes and antinutrients and the common knowledge of the "healthy diet" is just plain wrong.

And, yes, seafood is a concern due to mercury.  Which is too bad because many sources can be very nourishing.

The best eating plan for pregnant women is Brewer's.  https://www.drbrewerpregnancydiet.com/id96.html

In short, don't believe everything your doctor tells you.  Do your own research and talk to other women who have gone before you.  Follow your inner wisdom and common sense.

Best wishes, ladies, my guess date is Memorial Day!

  • Do what makes you comfortable, don't you guys ever wonder why so many restrictions when we all came out fine and there were not these food restrictions back then.  The only things I am staying away from in terms of food is hot dogs and coffee/caffeine.  My doctor gave me ok with everything else including milkshakes, cheeses and lunch meat she actually recommended me to eating turkey meat for lunch everyday.  Do what you are comfortable with and try not to worry.

  • I am not big on raw anything. But I tend to fall on the more laxed side of things when it comes to restrictions.

I think it is completely dumb for the whole lunch meat thing. I eat if I want it and have never had any problems. Honestly can you think of a time when you were not pregnant and got listeria from lunch meat. I know I can't. If it smells funky do not eat it. My doctor agrees with me on this.

Coffee is completely fine..... drink it. Just don't drink 3 pots of it a day. 1-2 cups is perfectly fine. Soda- fine too.  You are allowed to have caffeine just don't go over board.

Eggs I have eaten my eggs over easy while pregnant and again nothing happened. Caesar Salad have that all the time too.

My point is if you feel comfortable doing it, do it, I am sure you will be fine.

  • This is what I find most frustrating about docs waiting 8-12 weeks before seeing patients. I've seen so many conflicting things about what's safe and what isn't and it surprises me that docs don't at least send out a packet of info with what to avoid as soon as you schedule an appointment. I hadn't heard about soft serve (had TCBY on Sunday) and completely forgot that I've heard about cesar dressing from friends' past pregnancies (had some today). Sigh...as if I wasn't already worried enough...

I didn't know this no milkshake thing Sad Does that include Blizzards from Dairy Queen?

There are two bottles of wine in my kitchen from our vacation in wine country... I got my BFP 9 days after we came back, so we never had the chance to drink them. I'm so sad to have to leave them corked for so long... I might have a glass later on in my pregnancy.

Warm lunch meat grosses me out, so if I want a sandwich, I'll eat a cold one.
