Were you referred to your Infertility Specialist by your OB/GYN?

I'm not sure whether this is the correct board. But, I figured I'd ask anyway.

I was recently speaking with my gf in NY who told me she was able to see her fertility Dr without a referral from her OB/GYN. I'm in CT and had to be referred. Does this rule vary by state?

TIA!!!

And then I live in the same state as deputieswife and did not get a referral from my OB. There may be some variation by state, but I think the main factor in whether or not a referral is needed is insurance. Some types of insurance require referrals, some don't.

I think it depends on your insurance policy.  Mine did not require a referral and so I just made the appt without seeing my OB about it.

You might get more responses from the IF board. I was to my first, I sought out my second. Regardless, I'd do some research before committing if you have a particularly sticky diagnosis.

I was referred by my OB/GYN. I think whether or not you need a referral will depend on the RE office you're working with as well as your insurance carrier (if you have IF coverage).

I didn't need a referral as my insurance didn't requiire one.  But everyone is different.  Check your insurance.

I go to UCONN as well and was referred. She keeps pushing me to get a 2nd opinion and insistes that I don't need a referral. Most of the places I called today never asked about insurance, but, said I needed a referral.

If your Gyn originally referred you, then he/she might give you another one for a 2nd opinion. Mine originally gave me the option of UCONN or Yale, but probably would have referred me anywhere I had asked. Good luck.
