Will you use baby powder?

This may be a dumb question, but I really don't know what baby powder is used for or how exactly to use it. I also read something a while back about it possibly being dangerous to the baby (the powder getting into lungs or something?) Do you plan to use baby powder on LO? If so, how often do you use it?

Re: Will you use baby powder?

  • Some people use it on diaper rash.  I have read in many places recently that research has shown that baby powder can actually promote yeast infection diaper rashes.  My son has had a few of these rashes and they made diaper changes miserable.

  • No, I got like 4 big things of it at my baby shower and never used it once on DS. It is finally coming in handy now for my chafing issues, hahahaha.

  • It's not needed... We skip it completely.

  • Nope.  We didn't and won't.  Powder with talc in it is a proven health risk.  The cornstarch doesn't seem to be much better.  Back in the day when diaper technology isn't what it is today and a lot of moisture built up around the baby's skin, I guess the powder really helped.  Now, it's just not needed.  Seriously, pour a cup of water into a diaper and then feel it.  YOu can hardly tell it's wet.  Even cloth diapers are pretty good these days, especially with some of the liners you can put in them.  Powder just isn't necessary anymore.
  • If you are careful not to shake it all over the place then it's fine.  But with two kids so far I've not had very many reasons to use it.  We got a big bottle at my baby shower with my first, it's still mostly full.  We use it occasionally if their bum is looking a bit red so it doesn't turn into diaper rash, but that ends up with us using it like 4 times total in the two years the kids are in diapers.

It does help get sand off though so we mostly use it for that (beach, sandbox, etc).  :)

  • I will not be using baby powder unless I find a need for it. I used it on my daughter and she had all sorts of issues with rushes and thrush I believe it had something to do with the baby powder

  • No.  Talc is not safe, and non-talc powders are a pneumonia/lung hazard if they become airborne.  When needed we use aquaphor, vaseline, balmex, or, most often, target brand desitin.  I have never felt the need for powder.
  • I have never once opened a bottle of baby powder.

  • We used cornstarch with DD.   In the beginning, she would get a rash in her little neck rolls that powder helped.

When she started on solids and got some mean diaper rashes we would use a combo of butt paste, monistat cream, bacitracin and powder to get rid of it.  She only had a raw, bleeding bottom once or twice, so that combo really worked for us.

In 2.5 years we haven't made it though a container though, so we don't use it often.

  • I only use baby powder to freshen my hair on the 2nd day, or to absorb moisture in my shoes. Not on my baby's bum. Wink

  • I was told by an ER nurse that baby powder can promote yeast infections. He explained it and it made sense so I don't think I'll be using powder.

  • I only used it on DD when she had a nasty nasty diaper rash along with a tummy bug.  I used Maalox, Aquaphor and then covered it with cornstarch powder.  My DH and I referred to his as our "butt-muffin" recipe, and I worked like a charm.  Beyond that, I never used it once, except like PP on my second day hair, or when I use too much product.

  • i will not be using any baby powder. for 1- i know being an asthma patient myself, powder TOTALLY coats your lungs and feels like it's suffocating you. i will not be putting my LO through that.

As for diapering issues, i will use diaper rash cream (whatever works best for LO) and when she does not have any rash, i was told to use a little vasaline to help prevent rashes.

  • I use it in my shoes and when I put fresh sheets on the bed I sprinkle some at the foot of the bed.  But wasn't planning on using it with LO.

  • I use it on myself for chafing!  But as far as baby, no, probably not.
  • I picked up some Susan Brown's Baby Lotion to Powder (online at BRU).  I haven't had to use it yet obviously, so I can't say if it's worth it or not, but the item description says, "Provides talc-free natural comfort with pure cornstarch and a strong barrier against wetness.  This luxurious blend is applied in lotion form and slowly turns into a protective talc-free powder for the ultimate in coverage and safe baby skin care. No Parabens, No Animal Ingredients and No Animal Testing."

I knew I didn't want to use regular powder, but honestly didn't know how necessary something like it would be, so I figured I'd give this stuff a try.
