1st Trimester

Tattoos in first trimester

Im curious what you guys think of tattoos in the first tri? I had planned on getting a matching one with my bff in a few weeks but now Im not feeling too comfortable about it. Shes gonna be super disappointed.

The shop is very clean and has a good reputation and Ive had all my piercings done there with no problem, but Im more worried about needless trauma and pain on my body and the wee one. Its a small tattoo, but on my hip, so maybe not good because of weight gain as well!

Just curious what you guys think!

Re: Tattoos in first trimester

  • Personally, I wouldn't. I'm sure nothing would happen, but I'm a "not worth the risk" person.

  • I was supposed to have one done, but I cancelled mine. While I know nothing would most likely happen....there is no guarantee.  Infections can happen and there is no guarantee the ink is safe for a developing embryo/fetus.  IMHO....not worth the risk and I plan on waiting till I deliver.  For what it's worth, I am a ObGyn NP student and this is what I would tell my patients.

  • I wouldn't risk it.  Ask your friend if you can put a hold on the tattoo till after the baby arrives.  I'm sure she'll understand.  I would wait because of the location as well.

  • The reason you shouldn't get a tattoo or a piercing is because your body is focused on the baby right now and it would take full focus off of your pregnancy as well as increase your risk for infection. Not saying the shop isn't clean, but I have a family friend who is a tattoo artist, and he said most infections that he has seen actually come from poor aftercare. Also he won't tattoo breastfeeding moms just for their baby's safety, because he's a father of 3 and has actually knows people who have gotten pregnant and gotten a tattoo during their pregnancy as well as gotten a tattoo while breast feeding and those ladies got infections. So he always asks his customers before hand.

  • Does your friend know you're pregnant?  If so, then I'm sure she'll understand.  Please do not do it now...always a chance of infection no matter how clean the shop is.  Wait until after the baby is here.  You may want to get something extra special that reflects your baby somehow! :)

  • A reputable shop will not give a tattoo while pregnant. I would not - you could get all sorts of infections/diseases and it's not worth the risk. I would wait and have it as something to look forward to after the baby is born.

And in case anyone thinks I am anti-tattoo, DH has 3.

  • Thanks everybody, I feel better now. I havent even talked to the shop yet to see if they would do the tat while Im preggers, but I think its best I wait anyways. Better save the money for diapers anyways! Really appreciate the responses ladies!

  • no way I would. Although I wouldn't get one normally even if I wasn't pregnant.

  • If the tattoo artist is at all decent he wont give you one if he knows you are pregnant. I've always had to sign a waver saying I wasn't pregnant and if I was breastfeeding I'd pump and dump.

  • Any reputable shop would tell you to come back after you deliver.  It's one thing to be disappointed, but if your bff is upset about not getting matching tattoos right now, you're saving yourself some money and the trouble of looking at a tattoo that reminds you of a crappy friend.

  • also please remember that you're MORE prone to getting infections while pregnant...so your new tattoo is going to be more sensitive and prone to gathering staph and all kinds of crap after you get that tattoo. especially since you have to keep it slightly moist while healing. also who knows how your pregnant body is going to react to the ink? Dh is horribly allergic to red ink..it swells up and itches really bad..something to do with the metallic properties in the stuff used to make the color...just wait girl :)

  • Even if you didn't get an infection, you immune system may not let it heal properly, which could lead to it looking bad later on! Just another reason! LOL

I have 5 tattoos and have plans for many many more, but I'm taking a step away to have and nurse my babies. Then I'll get back at it!

  • I just wanted to add that your BFF will understand! You can get your matching tattoos after your baby is born (and nursed, if you are planning on that). :)

  • No No No!  You are not supposed to get tattooed while your pregant at all.  the ink has something in it that is not good for baby and the stress on your body is not good for baby either.  That is why they make you sign a paper saying you are not pregnant.  They wouldnt do that for no reason.  I can find out more if this isnt enough, my boyfriend is a tattoo artist and has been for 11 yrs.  I was just talking to him and two other guys from the shop about why its bad.  My boyfriend wont tattoo me while im pregnant, so that goes to show its not some unneccesary protocol.  If you want to ask them there is a question and message board on their site or you can look them up on face book.  Skin Thrills roanoke va. Tattoos last forever, you can wait.
  • I have tattoos and I think this is a stupid idea! I would not risk it. Plus if you're getting it on your hip, I hope you know by the end of this it will be ruined and never the same again because of the fact that area stretches. Wait until you're not pregnant or breastfeeding to get a tattoo. It may be a long wait but it's your child. I was planning on getting my leg piece started but I have to wait like a year and I'm ok with that because of baby.

  • None of my tattoos stretched out, and I dont have a lot of skin thats not covered.  I have  them across my lower stomach and thighs .  I gained 60 lbs with my first and I was scared they would get ruined but they didnt. Unless you gain an insane amount of weight... your skin is very elastic. There may be some stretch marks through the ink but they wont be noticable to anyone but you. Honestly my ink helps to hid the stretch marks i did get thankfully... but the fact of the matter is you have to wait till after baby.  Also your pain tolerance will be down. You are much more sensative to outside pain sources and it will hurt so much more then when you are not preggo. It is just an all around bad idea.  Its like going tanning... an unneccessary risk for vanity.
  • I wouldn't get a tattoo at any point in my pregnancy.
  • Talked with my friend, she wasnt disappointed at all! Thanks for all the responses, I figured it was a bad idea but its nice to have others opinions.

  • and now you have something to look forward to, somthing you can do for yourself.
