Interesting list

I found this article over at the EFF Board 10 things new parents don't need. So I thought it'd be fun to play. Tell me what you did or didn't get...go...

1. Designer nursery. Nope, I'm proud to say it did not go all out for this one.

2. Bedding. Nope. We all know bumpers and comforter and whatnot are no-nos, right? DS crib has one fitted sheet, that's it.

3. Changing table. OK, I did get one, but in my defense once we remove the changing pad attachment it'll be just a shelving unit. So, technically it's not a changing table.

4. Bassinet. Nope, we got a pnp.

5. Expensive NB clothing. Nope, did not go crazy here either.

6. Video monitor. Nope, don't even have a monitor.

7. Hight chair. We got a Space Saver, which will convert into a booster seat later on, so, according to the article I'm good on this one too.

8.Wipe warmer. Nope, I made my own cloth wipes.

9. A lot of anything. Well, I did get a gazillion bibs and DS goes through about 4 a day, so I have to disagree with the article on this one.

10. Diaper Genie. Nope, we cloth diaper.

Wow. 1 out of 10, not bad.

Re: Interesting list

  • The only things we got from the list were a video monitor and high chair, and I love both of them!  The high chair is very convertible, including having a booster seat option.  Plus, we have the space for it in our kitchen.  It also reclines for infants.  So when my DS had his fussy/needy days, I was able to entertain him and get dinner ready.  And I LOVE the video monitor.  Like kelly said, I like being able to check on the little guy before rushing into his room while he is sleeping.  So often, he is able to put himself back to sleep.  I am a pretty practical person and get overwhelmed with too much "stuff" so that really impacted what we registered for.  Plus, we were team green with a small nursery.  If we had known the gender and had more room, who's to say what might have happened... ;)

  • I have everything but the wipes warmer and video monitor! lol  I don't really know what's considered "designer" for a nursery tho. Might not have "needed" the stuff, but we sure use it and enjoy having it!

  • 1. Designer nursery. I bought a bedding set and did a nursery up from that.  But I got everything on sale/ clearance and my mom made most of the decorations cheaply and by hand.  So nope.

    2. Bedding. I did buy a bedding set and use everything but the bumpers.  My mom is actually going to make something out of those.  The quilt has all different textures and ds loves to lay on it and feel everything.

    3. Changing table. Nope.  I just use a changing pad on top of his dresser.

    4. Bassinet. Nope, I borrowed one from a friend but he only sleeps in the swing anyways.

    5. Expensive NB clothing. I didn't have to buy any as I got a crap ton of NB and 0-3 and 3-6 from other people.

    6. Video monitor. I got one used for 30 bucks at a consignment sale and love love love it.  So much so that if it broke today, I would have to run out and get a new one.  My ds likes to cover his face completely with his lovey, so I like being able to check on him at night.

    7. High chair. Yes but it converts to a toddler booster later on.

8.Wipe warmer. Nope, I made my own cloth wipes.

    9. A lot of anything. Umm I disagree with this one.  I didn't buy a bazillion anything and wish I had in some cases.  I lose 82 pacifiers a day and then he gets to screaming his head off while I look for one.  I need at least 100 more.  Same thing with the little water proof pads I put on his changing pad.  I go through these like crazy.

    10. Diaper Genie. Nope, we cloth diaper.

    1. Designer nursery. I created my own. Painted the walls half pink with a brown stripe. Nothing baby in there so she can grow with it. I went out for the nursery because it is her space.

    2. Bedding. I have a breathable bumper and a sheet. She uses blankets, not quilts.

    3. Changing table. I have one. If I didn't she would be changed on the floor. It can be converted to a shelf when she stops using it.

    4. Bassinet. No, I, too, have a PnP

    5. Expensive NB clothing. I spent quite a bit on NB because we didn't have much. She just outgrew her NB, and some outfits she can still wear. I didn't spend $30 on a dress though.

    6. Video monitor. No, I do have a regular monitor. Her bedroom is across the house.

    7. Hight chair. I have a space saver

8.Wipe warmer. Yup, when she was NB you couldn't change her diaper without her screaming because the wipes were cold. We got one, and still use it every day.

    9. A lot of anything. I use quite a bit with her. Socks, bibs, clothes, etc. The only thing she never wore were shoes. They were too wide for her feet.

    10. Diaper Genie. Yup. And it is heaven. Her room doesn't stink and neither does my front porch where the trash cans are!

I must be a special case because mostly everything listed, I use daily.

    1. Designer nursery. Nope, we didn't spend very much at all.  I made the curtains and a couple other things to go with our Noah's Ark theme.

    2. Bedding. I made a few sheets to go with the theme and a quilt.  Right now the quilt protects the rocker from cat hair.

    3. Changing table. Just a pad on the dresser

    4. Bassinet. Nope, we got a pnp.

    5. Expensive NB clothing. I got one pack of white onesies.  Thankfully several people bought her girl NB clothes when she was born (team green) because she was small and 0-3 didn't fit.

    6. Video monitor. We just have a regular monitor and I bought it on clearance

    7. Hight chair. We bought the FP 4-in-1, so right now our high chair is a swing. (How does this article suggest you feed a baby when they start solids?)

8.Wipe warmer. Nope, I made my own cloth wipes.

    9. A lot of anything. We were gifted a TON of blankets and no, I don't need them.

    10. Diaper Genie. Nope, we cloth diaper.

  • Ouch. I have almost all of them... does that make me a bad mommy?  I found this article over at the EFF Board 10 things new parents don't need. So I thought it'd be fun to play. Tell me what you did or didn't get...go...1. Designer nursery. We did all the work ourselves. We painted the whole thing (one wall is spectacular! and redid the floors (something we were planning on anyways) It's my fave room in our house, and I love it.2. Bedding. Crap. This is the one thing on this list I agree with.  We bought a set, and are only using the bedskirt, and occasionally the sheet. The same brand makes just sheets, and I wish I'd just gotten two of those for fraction of the cost.3. Changing table. We just use a change pad on the dresser. Love it. Use it all the time.4. Bassinet. Yes, but it was loaned to us. We put our PNP in the living room for naps/changes5. Expensive NB clothing. Not really.6. Video monitor.Yes, and I love it. I love being able to see if he really needs me, or is just settling, to check to see if he is breathing, and generally what's happening in there. I would recommend one to anyone.7. Hight chair. Yup, got the Boon Flair.8.Wipe warmer. Nope.9. A lot of anything. This one is too general. We have a lot of baby crap. But there's very little we haven't used.  Maybe the 30 washcloths we were given.10. Diaper Genie. Yup. We could have done without it, but it saves a lot of effort.

  • 1. Designer nursery. Yep

    2. Bedding. Yep...see above.

    3. Changing table. Not sure...we have a dresser with a changing pad on top.

    4. Bassinet. No, we used our stroller's bassinet.

    5. Expensive NB clothing. Yep, no regrets, I love having a dressed up baby.

    6. Video monitor. Yep

    7. Hight chair. Haven't bought it yet, but in laws are getting it for us this month

    8.Wipe warmer. Yep.

    9. A lot of anything. I got a lot of clothes, books and burp cloths.  We use them all

    10. Diaper Genie. Yep, where else would you put stinky diapers?

I guess I dont' really get their list.  Most of them are convenience items that I wouldn't want to live without.  If their point is not spending extra $, fine but I wouldn't tell moms to be not to buy anything on that list!

  • I have every single thing on the list...I even CD, but we sposie'd my DS part-time due to daycare, so I have a Genie too! Surprise

  • 1. Designer nursery. I love DD's room. Wouldn't change a thing. It's not "designer" but it's well put together. I'm glad we did this.

    2. Bedding. Yes, bumpers and a comforter. The bumpers were a waste, I can admit that. But the comforter is great, I use it to let LO play on her floor. And I got her set from Land of Nod. I love it too, wouldn't change a thing.

    3. Changing table. Bought one of these. Love it.

    4. Bassinet. From Land of Nod as well, also loved it. I'm sad we don't use it, but we'll definitely use it for LO #2

    5. Expensive NB clothing. I had no NB clothes. And good thing, DD was over 9lbs and never fit in NB clothes

    6. Video monitor. No, just a regular monitor that I hate. We bought one that glows/blinks blue throughout the night. We turn it off most nights, if LO is up we can hear her fine without the monitor on.

    7. High chair. We bought the Graco Blossom. Also love it.

    8.Wipe warmer. Nope.

    9. A lot of anything.  ?. This confused me. We have so many bibs and this morning I realized I was out of clean bibs. I do wash every Tues night. So there are certain items you do need a lot of. Bibs, burp clothes, diapers, wipes, bottles & paci's. I guess it just depends how often you want to wash things

    10. Diaper Genie. Yup and we love it.  It's soooo convenient.

  • The article's bit about how her baby "never even touched a bottle" got my back up, of course. And the $48 sleep sack is actually $30 once you click through.

And if you have a pnp, you don't need a play mat or an exersaucer?? And the play mat is only used for a couple months? Right.

All we bought from the list is the high chair, but I agree with others that very little on there is actually extravagant. It's just what works for individual families and budgets.

  • 1. Designer nursery. We did reno the baby room, but that was to insulate the walls.  We did nothing fancy though, it's just a room.

    2. Bedding. No.  I made 2 fitted sheets, and matching blankies (1 layer flannel, 1 layer quilting cotton, very simple.)

    3. Changing table. We had a pad on top of a dresser for our first.  My mum bought a 2nd hand one for $5 this time and we keep all K's clothes in it.

    4. Bassinet. No

    5. Expensive NB clothing. No.  Almost everything we got was hand me downs or gifts.

    6. Video monitor. No.

    7. High chair. We got a very plain one when A was about 9 months.

8.Wipe warmer. No. I made my own cloth wipes.

    9. A lot of anything. No we were really minimal with purchases

    10. Diaper Genie. No, we cloth diaper.

  • 1. Designer nursery. Yes

    2. Bedding. Yes

    3. Changing table. Yes. I couldn't imagine not having it. I use it all day every day.

    4. Bassinet. Yes.

    5. Expensive NB clothing. Anything I had was gifts.

    6. Video monitor. Yes and I use it all the time. It is great to be able to see LO.

    7. Hight chair. Yes

8.Wipe warmer. No. This item looked kind of useless.

    9. A lot of anything. I have TONS of bibs and blankets, but we really do use them so it's nice not to have to do laundry non stop. I also have an INSANE amount of clothes and that really is wasteful. They were gifts though. It breaks my heart for DD to wear something once (or sometimes never) and then it's already in the "doesn't fit anymore" drawer.

    10. Diaper Genie. Yes

So it looks like the only thing I didn't splurge on was the Wipes Warmer, LOL!

  • 1. Designer nursery.  No nursery at all for DD (she's in our room with us until we move next month), but I did kinda go all out/overboard for DS's.  Whoopsie.  I don't regret it though, we've carried the theme and a lot of the items over to his big boy room so I feel that it got put to a lot of good use.

    2. Bedding. See above- minimal for DD so far (bassinet and pack and play sheets)...but I had DS's custom made.  Whatevs.

    3. Changing table.  Yup and still use the hell out of it- but it's a changing table/dress combo.

    4. Bassinet. We have a pack n play and used the bassinet.

    5. Expensive NB clothing.  Hmmm, depends on your definition of "expensive", I think this will vary among people.  ie some may find Baby Gap expensive while others think it's reasonable.  To each their own!

    6. Video monitor.  We have an audio monitor and have barely used it with DD.

    7. Hight chair.  I agree with this one, we got on as a gift for DS and it was a PITA to clean and so big and bulky.  We switched him to the FP Healthy Care Booster and that is so much better!  I don't think we'll even use the highchair for DS.

8.Wipe warmer.  Nope, "cold" wipes for our family.

    9. A lot of anything. ?

    10. Diaper Genie. Yes, we got a DG II Elite and we love it.  In fact we bought a second to have one on each floor of our house!

  • 1. Designer nursery. No, we used inexpensive items but I think it looks nice

    2. Bedding. No bumpers or comforters but we did buy crib skirts

    3. Changing table. Yes, and we don't use it

    4. Bassinet. We use RnP

    5. Expensive NB clothing. We bought no NB clothes because we were gifted one zillion items

    6. Video monitor. This we do have, and it is useful. If we hear noise, we check the screen to see who it is. If N fusses, he'll go back to sleep. If E fusses he will actually wake up and cry shortly thereafter so we go get him.

    7. Hight chair. haven't bought one yet b/c they aren't eating solids

8.Wipe warmer. Nope, cold wipes for their booties :)

    9. A lot of anything. We bought a lot of wipes and a ton of bottles once I had to EP

    10. Diaper Genie. No, we also cloth diaper

  • 1. Designer nursery. We made a VERY nice nursery but did it all ourselves as well as made it something that he can use as he gets older.

    2. Bedding. Got it. We are not using the bumpers but we will be using the comforter and do now use the sheets and bed skirt.

    3. Changing table. Got it from my sister. Use it all of the time. Will convert to a book shelf later.

    4. Bassinet. Nope, used his crib from day 1.

    5. Expensive NB clothing. I might have gotten one thing for his baptism, but I don't see any issue with that.

    6. Video monitor. No - I would spend too much time staring at it. But I have a monitor.

    7. High chair. We got a Space Saver

8.Wipe warmer. Originally, no, but he was freaking every time we wiped his butt with a cold wipe. So we got one (never thought I would!)

    9. A lot of anything. I have a lot of "accessories," but it makes my life easier. And if I can afford it, why not?

    10. Diaper Genie. I have 2 - One upstairs and one downstairs. Then my house does not smell like sh*&

As I was filling this out, I sort of got annoyed. I mean who is to tell you what you don't need? Each kid is different, each family is different. What you spend your money on is your business.
