Thoughts on Dexter and MN question

So, I know there are mixed feelings out there about the name Dexter, but DH and I really love it. We are big fans of the show, which is where we got the idea, and it doesn't bother us that he is a serial killer in the show because who is really going to remember that years down the road anyways? I love the nn Dex too!

My first question is do you like this name?

Next question (even if you don't like the name Dexter): For middle names, my grandfather and father's name is Bernard. My grandfather goes by Ben (and dad goes by Bernie), so we were thinking either Benjamin or Bennett because I really don't love the name Bernard. So, my question is do you think Benjamin or Bennett are close enough to the name my grandfather always goes by, or should we just use Bernard to honor both my grandfather and father? They are both still living, but my grandfather may not make it much longer.

I LOVE Dexter, nn Dex! It's on our short list for a boy!

I think using Benjamin or Bennett is still a nice way to honor them. I think Dexter Benjamin is a lovely name.

2) I think if you're honoring someone with a MN, you should use their real name. Dexter Bernard sounds nice. And even if you don't like Bernard....no one ever uses their MN anyway.

I like the name Dexter a lot. It was on my list a few years ago but I took it off because of the television show. I think Dexter Bernard sounds fine together, but I really like Dexter Benjamin!

DD would have been Dexter (well, it was that or another name) and I have never seen the show. I like Benjamin.

I think Dex is a cute NN but I dislike Dexter enough that I wouldn't use it even if I always called my kid Dex. I think you'd be fine with either Benjamin or Bennett- they are definitely close enough to Ben that its obvious where it comes from.

I love Dexter. It was going to be DS's name but when he was born he was a Felix, not a Dexter. It's still on the list for DS#2. I also like it with both Bernard or Benjamin as a MN.

I thought Maxwell (DS) And Dexter would be great for twin names. (So, yes, I like Dexter.) And it's a TV show. I don't even watch tv that much anymore. Also, when I told my mom DD would be Samantha, she said, "Like the witch from Bewitched?" It was so ridiculous.

I think it's a great name. I wouldn't even think of the tv show. I might think of the nn Poindexter, which means nerd, right?

I still like it though, and LOVE Dex as a nn.
