Next month we're taking a flying/driving trip with my son, who is 16 months. I'd like to try loading some tv shows and/or movies to my ipod touch for him, in case of emergency lol (no flames please - we're bringing lots of books, toys, and of course snacks too). He doesn't watch tv at home yet and I'm not up on kids programming so I'm at a loss on what might me good and hold his interest. Anything educational? He loves dogs and music, maybe something with lots of songs? Any input would be appreciated!
Re: Good shows/movies to download for travel w/16 month old?
I hate to say this, but my daughter didn't like watching anything at that age. We don't have TV at home, but there were a few restless nights I tried putting on some Sesame street or something similar on youtube to get her attention hoping to calm her down.
She really didn't like watching anything at that age. I'm not sure that's the distraction you will need.
When I did travel with her at 16 months, (we flew, so a little different)
I tried to time it so that she would be nursing or napping on the plane, and I could try to interact with her in the airport to keep her happy. If you have the ability to bring bottles to calm him in the car, and the take a break and get outside to let him move around a bit during cranky times. it'll be good for you to get out and stretch too. Hope for nice long naps! Bring music he thinks is either fun or calming.
I HATE Yo Gabba Gabba, but it definetly holds his attention (It just seems like crack for babies....j/k). I use it on nights he is fighting breathing treatments.
We use veggie tales, word world, disney movies (princess and the frog, currently holds his attention the best), barney (in desperation), and sign time for car trips.
signing time, sesame street, roary the racing car (the American version is on sprout, but we watch the british version on youtube so I'm not sure how good the american dvd would be), cars (the disney movie), top gear (the BBC car show)...do you sense a theme? ;-)
Oh -Oceans, he LOVED Oceans. And I loved listening to pierce brosnan :-)
When we fly all the rules go out the window, you'll have no flames from me!
Yo Gabba Gabba is my hail mary pass. I agree with PP about it being baby crack, DD practically starts drooling if she catches a second of it. I only had to break out 1 episode during our recent flights but I was grateful to have it!
As a warning, don't buy videos from Amazon to use on your iPod. I realized a little too late that Amazon videos don't play on iStuff
this :-( sorry!
when my son was 20 months we flew to Hawaii for vacation (from east coast), I was armed with a half dozen dvds and he had only a fleeting interest in a few of them. But since we had pretty much never let him watch tv, I wasn't super surprised.
but the one that he was more into than anything else was The Wiggles: Hot Potatoes (best of the Wiggles). I think he liked it because each song was only a few minutes long, so it didn't challenge his attention span too much :-)

Best of luck!
eta: sorry, I missed that you wanted to download to your ipod touch, the dvd I mentioned IS available on iTunes :-)
Elmo's World. (It's the last segment of Sesame Street, but it's actually written for an audience that is aged 0-2, whereas the rest of Sesame Street is written for 3-5 year olds.)
Elmo was completely entrancing to DS around 18 months or so. It also follows a very exact sequence in every episode, which is annoying for adults but little kids love it. Not to mention that there are lots of segments with real children in it, which I think is nice.
