Transient Synovitis?

Has anyone experienced this before?  It's a virus in the hip region.

Alec woke up this morning and could hardly walk. He hasn't fallen or anything recently. The doctor mentioned that she thought that he may have Transient Synovitis.  If he comes down with a fever, we have to take him in for blood work.

I looked online and it seems pretty common.

Re: Transient Synovitis?

  • Is this the same thing that slw's Gavin had?

  • I'm pretty sure someone on this board had it.....I'm thinking Gavin and SLW?
  • Yep, it was us!  They called it Toxic Synovitis though.  Same thing, I think.  Gavin had it at Christmas last year.  When Sophie was 2 weeks old.  It was lovely.  He had had a nasty ear/sinus infection the week before and this came after.  It scared the crap out of us.  Took him to CHOA for x-rays- nothing.  It kept getting worse and worse and DH took him back to our pedi and they finally dx it as TS.  There is really nothing you can do except give motrin and rest and wait it out.  He really didn't move from the sofa for a week.  Potty training went out the window entirely- he couldn't sit or stand to pee w/o excruciating pain so he went back in pull ups.  I thought we would have to start over completely but once the virus was healed, he went right back to pottying no problem.  I think they say it can last from 7-11 days and his lasted the entire 11 days.  Then on day 12, it was like it never happened.  Crazy stuff.  Hang in there mama- this ones a doozy!

I wonder if this has been contributing to all the potty problems we have been having. Alec is extremely constipated and is having accidents.  Poor guy is getting doped up on Miralax and motrin.  He hasn't had a cold or anything--I've been getting sick so I know we have definitely have germs in the house.

Yes, this is all probably related.  I swear it took forever for us to put all the pieces together for this illness- it was so bizarre.  No one we knew had ever heard of it, but then the dr's acted like it was no big deal.  Umm, my kid can't walk!  That is a big effing deal!!!!  And yes, Gavin had been having potty issues leading up to it as well.  I was blaming the transition to a new daycare and the new baby but in retrospect, it was probably all the virus.  Gavin seems to only wet the bed when he's sick or getting sick so for whatever reason, potty problems and illness go hand in hand for him.  Also, my cousin is a PA for a pedi and she said that the virus that sets it off is not always detectable.  She said its like the body did such a good job fighting off the actual virus that it backfired on itself and caused the TS.  So strange.

  • My friend's daughter got this about 2 years ago and had to be hospitalized and put on antibiotics.  She even had to have an IV (for the antibiotic) after she left the hospital for a few weeks.  I guess she had a more severe case?
