Trouble TTC

Can you drink while taking Clomid?

I forgot to ask my dr yesterday. I was just wondering if drinking changes the effectiveness of Clomid? Or causes some annoying side effect? Google only turned up a bunch of "oh I would NEVER drink while ttc!!"

Re: Can you drink while taking Clomid?

  • My RE said 1-2/night was OK...but he'd suggest cutting back if possible.  I was a "drink till it's pink" girl.  However, once I started taking meds I stopped drinking while on them.

  • I don't think it would hurt; however, your hot flashes may increase, particularly if you are drinking the vino.

  • I was told to live a normal life pre-trigger for my clomid and injects cycles. For my IVF cycle I was restricted much more though. I say pre-o, go for it if you want a few drinks. But I agree with pp's that it might make s/e more intense.

  • I had a drink while on Clomid, and I had a great response (I actually got a BFP).  My hot flashes and nausea were terrible, but I don't think it was from the one or two drinks I did have.

  • Thanks! I just started Clomid yesterday, but I haven't had any side effects (hopefully this continues). I just quit smoking today. I know I should have done it sooner but better late than never right? So anyway I really need a drink so I can stop be such a wretched crabbypants. I'm even getting on my own nerves!

Good girl!!!! I know how hard it is (former 1/2 pack/day smoker, and still slip sometimes when I'm on treatment breaks).

  • Thanks : ) I knew I had to do it, but I quit when I got pg with DD and that was super easy. It helps tremendously, for me, to quit to protect someone else. I started again when DD was about 9 months. I was going to wait until I got pg to quit again but my RE gave me a whole "cigs decrease the effectiveness of any treatment we do" speech. So I decided to just bite the bullet and quit now.

I wish I had your RE. I was going to quit when we began treatments, but my RE and many others from talking to other ladies, makes you be 3 months smoke free BEFORE beginning treatments. And you are tested for nicotine in your system before being able to begin treatments. So I am two and a half weeks smoke free and still have to wait until December to begin treatments.

I've been having a beer or two a night, and I just started Clomid this cycle.  The info from the pharmacy said to "limit drinking".  Considering I also just quit smoking a month ago, and could have a six pack a night if I didn't stop myself, I consider 1-2 a night "limiting" drinking.  Perhaps I am not the model of good health, though.

I feel your pain.  I quit when we first started trying, but the "I might be pregnant" or "this could be the month" self-talk to curb cravings only worked for about 9-10 months before I threw my hands up and gave in.  I knew I would quit if I did get pregnant.  But going to the RE forced me to bite the bullet too.  Good luck staying smoke-free! (And getting knocked up)

  • To raven: Wow!!! That sucks! I would have been so sad! I also down played my smoking to him (said I was at a pack every 4 days, bit in reality I was more like a pack every 2 days). I started to feel really bad and guilty about that, I mean, how dumb is it to keep things from a dr that is prescribing meds for you?

ETA: clarify who I was talking to since I can't quote from my phone

  • I didn't cut drinking entirely. But it didn't get me pregnant, so take that with a grain of salt. But I didn't stop for my cycle that worked, either (FET). Good luck!

Yes it broke my heart into a million pieces to hear that from my RE. Here it was 13 cycles with no luck and I am thinking I am going to begin treatments, etc. perfect timing in my cycle, etc. And he told me this. I was told by many ladies on the boards to be COMPLETELY honest with the RE about EVERYTHING and to leave nothing out. Which was my mentality going in as well.

Even if I had down played the smoking like you had, it wouldn't have mattered, three months is the standard and from talking to other ladies on here, it is pretty common as well. I just wish I knew that before heading in, it would have given me motivation to quit.
