Line getting lighter

Hi ladies-

I am looking for some opinions/ reassurance.  I have been testing about every 2-3 days for about 3 weeks. The line on the pregnancy tests have progressively gotten darker.  That is until yesterday. I took one yesterday and I thought the line looked lighter but did not think much of it- was still happy to see a line. Since yesterdays line was lighter I took one today....and it was MUCH lighter than some of my previous tests.  My doctor appt is not for 3 weeks still. I have had no bleeding or cramping or anything like that. I know I am silly for testing this much but it has really kept me re-assured since I have very few symptom. Is the fact the test is getting lighter a bad sign? Im worried! Thanks so much!

  • I wonder why your dr wont see you for 3 weeks? Must depend on the doctor, of course...but I called mine at 8:30 am and she made me an apt for that day!  Yikes 3 weeks is a long time to say "am I or arent I?" Well I am not sure I have great advice, but I am hoping good things for ya!

  • Is it possible it's a faulty test?

I've had one random lighter line from a bad test.  When I've had several, it's always meant I'm miscarrying.

    Call your doctor.  Good luck.

  • actually, when you can be TOO pregnant for a test to work.  If you have too much of the hormone in you, which you do as your pregnancy progresses the test basically can't read it anymore.  Stop peeing on sticks, you are pregnant!

Yes, I have heard that at one point your levels become too high and the test can no longer read it so the test line can get lighter and lighter.

  • Thank you so far for your responses...I really appreciate the insight! I would love to believe that my hcg levels are rising and that is why...but is that possible at 6 weeks?

My dr sees patients for their first visit between 8-10 weeks....seems so late to me but probably just because I am anxious!

  • Stop peeing on tests! You are probably just drinking more water and it is diluting your urine.

Let me show you what happened with the pee strips (dollar tree) for DS2. I thought for sure I was going to miscarry.

In order from top to bottom=9dpo; 11dpo; 12dpo; 15dpo (hcg 173); 16dpo-the line disappeared I was so freaked out. All was well. He is a very healthy and energetic toddler.

First: for your own sanity stop taking tests. There's so many factors. Like drinking a lot of water, faulty tests, different strength tests. Our HCG levels fluctuate. One hour it's high then it might dip a bit.

Second: Relax, enjoy your time for now. You are pregnant. You have a baby, enjoy whatever time it is that you have.

Third: Can you see your doc earlier for reassurance? If not, just wait be patient.

I know how hard it is. My numbers were low and I was freaking out too, but I'm now 15 weeks :)

  • Maybe call your doctor and ask if they will order you a beta blood test for piece of mind. I called and made my first appt when I found out at under 4 weeks. I had already taken 3 tests and all were positive including 2 that said "pregnant" but had a m/c in April. So my doc did 2 beta's for me and I took them a week apart. My #s were great. That was 3 weeks ago. My appt is still not until next week but I also got another beta and an u/s due to spotting. Still have yet to see my doc. If you talk to them, they may be able to ease your mind. Give it a try.

  • What the others said! Schedule another beta and possibly early u/s for your peace of mind.

FYI, I've had six miscarriages, and I always had bleeding or a full-on m/c long before my hCG levels diminished. (That's one reason it makes NO sense to pee on things this far along!) If you were only 4 weeks, I'd say yes, lighter tests could mean a chemical. But as far along as you are, I'd stop proactively worrying unless you have a real reason to. But definitely get in for an hCG quantitative and an u/s as soon as they can squeeze you in!

  • Thank you all! I love this board to hear from others who have gone through this before and also understand the anxiety that comes along with it.  I may try calling my doctor in the next few days....and I will try my best to stop POAS!

if your anxious (which is totally normal and okay) and your doctor refuses to see you - I would get a new doctor.  Pick up you records and start calling around!  You pay the doctor to keep you happy - its a service..
