Since we are having twins people seem to think that it is totally fine to ask if they are "natural" or some just come out and ask if I did IVF. I'm not ashamed of the fact that I did IVF and close family and friends know that's how the babies were conceived. At the same time however, I don't feel the need to discuss how my children were conceived with aquaintences or complete strangers. Even if they were spontaneous and not due to IVF, I would still think it's a rude question. I also dispise the "natural" comment, as if my children are unnatural in some way.

My question is, how should I respond to people who say this? I would love to come up with some clever snarky response but usually I'm too annoyed to think of one and end up just saying they are natural and changing the subject because really, IVF or not, they are still natural and not some synthetic baby. Any ideas?

This might be a good thing to post on the multiples board- the ladies over there get this a lot. Our twins are spontaneous, and I haven't been asked that question yet, so I haven't had to respond, sarcastic or otherwise. If people ask if twins run in your family, you might just say, "They do now!" Or, if they ask if they are "natural," maybe say that how they were conceived is awfully personal- why would they like to know? (That might end it there). Otherwise, something like "Well, they're not aliens, so I guess that makes them natural, huh?" might shut people up too. Good luck! Hopefully you don't run in to too many more people who can't mind their own business.

I don't have any good comebacks but I feel the same as you do. I can't tell anyone it's twins without them asking "Oh, do twins run in your family??" does it matter? Do twins REALLY need to run in your family in order to have them? No, I don't think so! but I just tell them yes and that my aunt and cousin have twins. Little do they know my aunt and cousin both went through IVF so technically twins don't "run in my family" but to people who want to be annoying enough to ask think they do Wink

My favorite answer to rude questions like that is just to say "Why do you ask?". It points out that they're being rude, although it's not really snarky.

I would just say 'What an interesting question' and then be silent. Let them figure out from the silence that it's a tacky question!

If someone asked "how were they conceived?" My first instinct would be to ask "how were you conceived?"

Usually answering with anything sex related will shut people up real fast. Like what PP said about doing it like rabbits.

I agree with the gratuitous sex comments like "if you consider missionary position unnatural" or "well they aren't aliens so ya I guess they're natural". I get people being curious but that is none of their business. This will remind me to be mindful of comments I make in the future (not that I've ever asked that).

This also reminds me of my cousin, who has identical twin girls. When people ask if they're twins, he always says, "Can you believe they're cousins???" and walks away.

Depending on the situation, I would either go with:

"Why do you ask?" and kind of leave it at that

OR

"Well, they're certainly not synthetic babies..."

I would never have the gall to give a dirty response, although I find that hilarious!

I know some weeks back there was a post inquiring of the twin mommies whether or not their twins were spontaneous. I hope none of the twin moms were offended. I found it to be very interesting and actually used the information I learned there to let my friend know she's not necessarily going to have multiples if she takes Clomid.
