"While we're gone" packages?

We're heading to Playa del Carmen end of next month, and Ava will stay with her grandma & "Poppa Pancake" up north on the farm. She loves it there, and I suspect very little oppositition to the arrangements.

EXCEPT, she's clingy to her momma, and being apart for 6 days will stink for us both. There will be moments of saddness, I'm sure.

I'd like to do envelopes or boxes she can open each morning, from us. (or at some point during the day when she has a "where's momma" meltdown??)

but I need ideas on what to put inside.  thx.

Re: "While we're gone" packages?

  • What about a book for the first night that has the option of you recording YOU reading it to her?

stuff for a fun art project

maybe you could do a little comic strip or drawing of the three of you on an adventure for her to look at

are your parents tech saavy?  could you email them videos ahead of time?  maybe you doing a silly dance that she likes to do "with" you, or you just telling her how much you love her and all the fun things she gets to do with her grandparents?

  • Loading the player...
  • Photos of Mom and Dad or Mom and Ava.  If you could put one in a locket that she could wear on a necklace it could be an extra special gift reinforced with the "Momma's always right by your heart even if she's not right by your side" kinda thing.

New book (preferably of the "Llama Llama Misses Mamma" or "The Kissing Hand" variety)

Some fun physical activity - coloring book, beads to string on pipe cleaners, new play doh, etc.

Can you skype her while you're gone?  Skype has done wonders for my kids being away from DH.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

Ohhhh.....  Hallmark makes these.  The boys did one for DH for father's day and it's one of their favorite things in the world.

Do a recordable book for sure!

  • Hit up the Target dollar section or take a trip to your closest dollar store.  Lots of ideas for practically nothing!

I know Ava is older than Stella, but glow sticks are a HUGE hit in our house right now.  She gets one before bed and it makes bedtime a breeze!  It might make Ava feel a little better about going to bed somewhere other than home without her mama.

Does she likes stickers?  What about a sticker book and a bunch of stickers?

And a special treat that she normally doesn't get?  Like M&M's, a sucker, etc.

FWIW...my mom used to do these when I was a little girl and I still think back so fondly on my little packages.  It was always something I really looked forward to!

  • love the glowstick idea! and the others are good too! thanks everyone.

Now... if only we can ease MY fears about leaving, lol.... (we got such an insane deal on this getaway, and Davez really wanted to get out of town before the holidays... not complaining... but this will be hard on me!)

I'd say to just keep a cocktail in hand to help ease your fears, but that isn't even an option right now!  Big Smile

You will have a blast!  Enjoy this time with your hubby before the new babies come.  I usually find that the build up is harding than actually being away.  Course...I've only done weekends so far.  Not sure how well I'd handle several days!

  • the first i would put a disposable camera so she can take pics of what she did while you were gone for you to see when you get back. then one with some small craft stuff to make you something. a pic of you two doing something she likes. you could draw a picture for her.

when we left DD when she was young she took pictures everyday so we could see what she did with grandma and grandpa. she loved it, the pictures were bad because she was very young but still fun. she made lots of drawings etc for us.

  • I love the idea of giving her a disposable camera. How neat to see those pictures!

Before I went in for my c section hospital stay, I went to Target and found most of the stuff in the dollar bins. I found a couple art projects (door hangy things they can decorate with stickers, then put on their bedroom door knob), I bought those popcorn buckets and put a bag of popcorn in there, the little play golf set was a hit, I put in even just some snack crackers or whatever.

I also wrapped all of them, so that made it a bit more special I think. I know I did it more for myself, cuz I was pretty sad about leaving them, but they did great as will Ava.

  • A couple other ideas: a new bath toy, craft/art projects so she can show you when she sees you. Also the dollar store has a ton of stuff for kids.

  • Instead of a disposable camera - how about shell out about double as much and get one that lasts forever (or a really long time)? We have this and LOVE it: https://www.amazon.com/VTech-80-106900-901-Vtech-Kidizoom-Camera/dp/B0027CS7D6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1317074797&sr=8-3

Do you have a pair of jammies that you wear religiously that she sees or a special sweatshirt she sees you in a lot? Give that to her to snuggle at night (after you've worn it for days on end so your stink is all over it).

And I LOVE the locket idea!
