Repetitive orange cards. Help?

So, my daughter is in 1st grade and they use the card system. Green, then yellow, then orange, then red.

Her teacher stopped my husband yesterday and said that she was on orange all this week so far. Nova (my daughter) doesnt remember why she got her card changed when i ask her.

Im having her tested for ADHD, since there is history of it on my family's side and her dad's side but everything that ive looked at online doesnt sound like her.

Anyone else dealing with this? How do you talk to your little one about it?

Re: Repetitive orange cards. Help?

  • It's really hard when they can't remember what they did.  I had the teacher send me home a behavior report every day last year (ended up being more like weekly the 2nd half of the year, but it was more specific than just "orange").  It was good and bad.  I had to learn to be objective and just talk to DS about making better choices vs. getting upset about what I saw.  DS isn't "classic" ADHD either.  He really isn't hyperactive at all, but he has trouble controlling his impulses, loses focus a lot (including having trouble following directions, forgetting what happened in school, etc) and can have trouble sitting for too long.  With a teacher that doesn't understand what is causing that behavior, it can lead to a lot of negative feedback.  I hope you get some answers.  GL!

  • Thanks. You made a good point. I try to be as objective as possible and remind her why we have to behave when we're at school and why it's so important to listen and pay attention to the teacher. It is hard when she doesnt remember because then i cant use that as an example.

    Thanks again! :)

  • Do you think she really doesn't remember, or is just saying that b/c she doesn't want to talk about it? My dd knows exactly what she did to get a different "rating", we use numbers. The teacher also jots down the reason in the daily log so we can talk about it.

We started having her write lines for whatever she did wrong. yesterday it was excessive talking, so she wrote "I will not talk in class" like 30 times. We definitely talk about it every night whether it was good or bad behavior.

  • I could have written this.  I actually hopped over to this board to ask the exact same question.  We started with a reward system that if he stays on green all week, he gets a small prize at the end of the week (like a pack of m&ms or something).  This week he blew it on Tuesday, so there has been nothing to work for in terms of a prize (not that there should be a prize for everything, but this is a hard thing for him to do so I feel rewarding him for it will give him some motivation).  Then he came home with another yellow.  I told him today that there would be no wii this weekend if he came home with one today.  He can only play wii on the weekends, so this should be a big deal.  The problem is that he is so impulsive and only thinks in the moment, even if he is fully award of the consequences, both positive and negative.  He needs to learn to think his actions through, but I think he gets so focused on whatever he is doing that he can't separate himself from it to do what he should be doing.  Therefore he isn't paying attention in class or following directions because I think he is so busy doing his own thing.  Does that make sense?  I am curious to see what advice other posters will have.

  • I use this clip chart in my class. So much, much more positive than "turning cards" for bad behavior.https://www.newmanagement.com/ebooks/pdf/clip_chart_ebook.pdf
  • I think the first thing to remember is your daugher is only in 1st grade.  DS's teacher uses the Green, yellow, orange red system too.  He usually has at least one yellow or orange a week.  I've emailed his teacher a few times about it, and everytime she responds back saying the most of the time his yellows and oranges are either from not following directions right away or not sitting still.  Once he gets the yellow or orange he modifies his behavior & all is good.  The teacher said that it was "normal' behavior for a child who's still new to school, and that is why she didn't contact me about it.  She just wants to use the color change to let DS know that his behavior is not OK.  That way bad habits don't get started.  It may be that a similar situarion is happening with your daughter.

I highly recommend talking to the teacher.  She/he can shed some light on what exactly is happening, and she will probably have some suggestions on what you can do at home to reinforce "good" behavior.

What is the teacher doing to reinforce good behavior at school? Keeping a child constantly on a "bad" color keeps reinforcing bad behaior. If one of my students gets below a green on the class clip chart, as SOON as I see them doing something good, they immediately go right back to green. Often that is like 30 seconds after I put their pin down a color. You have to catch them doing good and they will keep doing good!
  • We just got an unofficial diagnosis last friday for ADHD.  My son is only in Kindergarten though but his teacher uses the cards system as well only there is green, yellow, red.  But he was consistently getting yellow and red days so I spoke with the teacher and she has been EXTREMELY helpful..She has a calender that she sends home with a note everyday with what color and what he did to earn the yellow or red..most teachers are grateful to hear from you and want your help so i would talk to her and then you can discuss the behaviors at home as well.

We started taking away a privelage like riding his bike, playing in the sandbox, watching tv etc unless he gets green days..bc he loves riding his bike and playing in the sandbox so much it is a great motivator for him to try(even though it is somewhat out of his control with the ADHD) to get the green days:)  It has helped somewhat, but we just started Omega 3 supplements...hopefully they help with his ADD but it may be worth a shot with your daughter..it is good for her even if it doesn't end up helping in the long run:)  Best of luck and feel free to PM me if there is anything other ?'s i can answer although i am fairly new at this i have done a TON of research:)

  • This was the reason we ended up calling our pediatrician...i know that it feels like you are trying to make an excuse for your childs behavior, but my son fully knows and understands what is right and wrong, but still does not stop him...they feel he is more the impulsive form of ADD along with the hyperactivity.  I am not upset that this is what my son has, actually glad to know that it has a name other than just defiant and there are steps now i can take and hopefully make things better!
