I am new to this board and mostly a lurker but my son did not start ABA until he was over 3 and in school.
I think ABA is too much for a NT 19 month old, they just aren't mature enough to understand. It was a tad much for my son at 3 but he did great and really excelled at 4. He is in a mainstream school now and I wish ABA was still an option.
I had a nice long response but the nest ate it.....ABA isn't too much for a child his age. Natural setting ABA would work well. When I have more time I can explain more.
My 19 month old was just diagnosed with ASD last week. I really don't know that much about ABA yet, but we interviewed our first agency today. My EI says thats the only therapy offered for ASD through their service. We had a pedi appointment yesterday and she said she truly believes starting it this young is a huge help in their development. The developmental pedi who diagnosed her said it is the only therapy she would recommend.
DD was dx'd a bit later (22 months), but ABA was recommended at that time... in the moment, before we really dug our heels in, it felt like a lot, but I quickly changed my tune once I saw how effective the therapy was, and how well DD took to it.
So no, I don't necessarily think ABA is too much for a 19-month-old (depending on the kid, of course!)

Hmm, to me your EI has it backwards. He should get ABA now because he's so young. Once he has the skills, he can progress to floortime. ABA is great for gaining the very basic skills because the approach is simple. It's a lot of repetition and cause and effect. They call it DTT (discrete trial training). It's great for basic speech skills (learning words). My own DS learned the concept of "I don't know" this way when he was little.
I can't really imagine floortime with a 19-month old.
So, I've lurked on this board for a long time and this is my first post here but I thought I would chime in.
My DS was dx'd with mild/moderate ASD at 19 months and they recommended ABA. We had to delay starting services because we moved out of state 4 days after his diagnosis. He began ABA last September, 2 weeks after his 2nd birthday. We've been doing ABA in home, 3 days per week, 1.5 hours a day. The progress he has made in this last year is amazing. I can't believe how much progress he has made. Every specialist I spoke with kept emphasizing how important early intervention is with ASD, especially between the ages of 2-3 and my DS definitely demonstrates that.
My son was 14 months old when he was diagnosed and we started ABA soon after. With a child that young, the therapist is working on the floor with him the whole time and he gets lots of breaks. DS gets 2 hours every day and this will be increased soon. It has been amazingly effective. So, I definitely don't think 19 months is too young! I'm not as familiar with floortime as it is not offered in my area.
These are two different approaches! A good cross is ESDM for someone this young. As for your question, DS was receiving 20+ hours of ABA weekly at 15 months.
Not a mom (yet), but I am a SLP. Research indicates that ABA introduced early-on provides the best results and biggest gains. I know it seems restrictive, and at times "cold", but, it works. If I were in your situation, I would push for it and not stop until he gets it.
Re: ASD moms - does anyone thing ABA is too much for a 19 month old?
