Upstate NY Babies

Would you take your toddler to an ultrasound?

We have our a/s on Thursday and I can't wait to see this LO!  Hard to believe this pregnancy is already almost 1/2 over!

DH has been asking if we should take L with us, so he can see the baby too.  My dr. appointment is supposed to be right after the scan and we'd have to take L with us, but sometimes they run late.  I'm thinking it would be a bad idea to take him.  I think he will not really be interested in the scan, and it will be a nightmare if he misbehaves.  Plus, we can show him the pictures afterwards so he can still get to see the baby and it might be a bit more real to him then (although he seems to get it now too).

I'm just curious if anyone else took their toddlers to any of their ultrasounds?

Re: Would you take your toddler to an ultrasound?

  • G was there for all three of mine, but he was a tad older than L.  We just took his snacks and his backpack with some things to entertain him and he was fine.

  • I had to take DD to most of my Dr appts.  I just made sure when I was haing my u/s, she was in the stroller having a snack or being preoccupied.  But for the most part, toddlers aren't interested in that stuff and dr or hospital visits get pretty boring, fast.
  • Thinking back to my a/s with DD, I wouldn't have wanted to have a toddler with me. I downed a ton of water and then they were running behind by at least 45 minutes, so I pretty much hobbled back to the room. My dr appt was after and I am pretty sure I spent at least 2 hours there that day. If your appt was earlier in the day (or right after the lunch break?) maybe I would, but I wouldn't imagine they would understand very much. So, in conclusion, if you HAD to, I would think it is do-able but I wouldn't volunteer for it.

  • Just an FYI--you may want to check to make sure that kids are allowed.  I remember when I went in for one of my ultrasounds there was a woman in the waiting room with a toddler.  They said that the toddler was not allowed and I felt so bad because the woman was telling them that she could not find a babysitter.
  • for our a/s ultrasound we took DS- but ours was first thing in the morning...I brought snacks and a couple toys and when he needed a break DH took him in the hall..

  • We took Rosie to our first u/s, but only because we didn't have anyone to watch her.  All of my other u/s were done while she was in preschool or my mom watched her.

She really had no clue what was going on (although we hadn't told her I was pg yet), but even in the last week when I had the 3d u/s done, she didn't really "get" it from looking at the pictures.  It's hard enough for adults to figure out what they're seeing, toddlers really don't understand it.

  • If I could get away with it, I wouldn't. There's no way DD would hang out for that long without wanting to take everything off every shelf and press every button she could find.

  • Thanks girls.  I think we'll stick with the plan and leave L at daycare, while we're at the a/s and appointment.  We'll just show him the pictures when we all are home at night.   I can't wait till Thursday!
