April 2012 Moms

Has anyone else quit cooking?

I love to cook. Heck, if I am bored..I look for something to cook.

I haven't been in the kitchen in the past couple of weeks and DH put his foot down and said no more take out.

The only "cooking" I have been doing is what can be done in the microwave.

I am making my grocery list for the week and I am trying to figure out what to do. I know I've got to man up and get back in the kitchen.. (wahh wahh wahh I don't wanna)

Aside from frozen dinners, what are you "cooking" if you hate to cook?

Re: Has anyone else quit cooking?

  • yep, pretty much.  Food is grossing me out lately and I don't have the energy to do more than make a sandwich or heat something up.  Fortunately for me, DH usually isn't too hungry for dinner and my kids don't eat anything too fancy.

  • I don't cook. My husband cooks all of the meals in our house. I usually help him prepare the ingredients though, but there was about a good month when I didn't because it was so gross to me.

We limit ourselves to one meal out per week (that we pay for). It is tough some weeks, but we usually stick to it.

  • I've been on strike in the kitchen. Every time I cook dinner, H decides to stay out late and the food goes to waste (I eat my share of it and save leftovers for him, which he doesn't eat). So there's no real point to me cooking.

  • Dillon and I have been living off of easy stuff. I think DH wants real food for once and I feel awful that he works all day and I can't even cook him dinner at night.

  • This is totally me.  I have a cooking blog that I had been actively updated for almost 3 years and I just stopped when I found out I was pregnant.  I love to cook, but with working I just don't have the energy to do it.  If DH goes out and buys the groceries for a certain meal on a weekend I will make it, but other than that, nothing.  I have been highlighting some recipes to try as soon as I start feeling better.  I really do miss it!

  • Yes I have stopped for the most part. DH has taken over. Usually we would cook most of the meats on the grill anyways so he would do that part but I would cook the sides on the stove. Now he pretty much does everything - including cleaning up. He has been wonderful and I haven't even had to ask! He knows I don't feel so great (nauseaous all the time) so he just does it :)

  • DH and I normally cook together, but we've been living on take out for the past 2 months to humor my food aversions. Right as I'm starting to like food again, wham, we both get hit with this cold and neither of us has the energy to cook. Maybe towards the end of the week we can resume the routine. It's killing our budget.

  • It's killing our budget, too.

Only 30 some odd weeks to go, ladies!

  • Yes :-( We are eating out all the time now.

I have a food blog too! I went from posting 2-3 recipes a week, to 2-3 recipes in the past month!  Arg!

  • I haven't really cooked a meal in a few weeks. I do little things here and there, but I cannot stomach the cooking and DH is so worn out by the time he gets home, he'd just as soon eat some soup and a sandwhich. DD eats easy stuff too, so I usually end up with something comforting and really bad for me as well.

This weekend, my in-laws, my mom and our friends furnished every single meal for us while we were out and about visiting.

I know I have to get back into the swing soon to save our budget, our family time eating together and so I don't get rusty. I have just recently come into my own as a cook because I hated cooking until I lost Cailin. I think cooking gave me an outlet for my grief.

  • I used to love cooking as well but I have so many aversions and by the end of the day I am so tired, the thought of cooking is so far from my mind! H has been picking up a lot of the slack, the only thing I want to eat these days for dinner is a bowl of cereal.

  • I have good intentions of cooking but then the thought of food makes me sick or when I get home from work I?m way too tired. I?ve actually made some baked pasta for dinner tonight ? DH will be shocked !

  • I just recently started to get the urge again to cook and its still seems tough but I try and push through it.. I dont think my husbands belly or my bank account couldnt handle much more takeout lol

  • For sure! I'm having trouble just opening the refrigerator so cooking is definitely out of the question. My husband has been picking up the slack and I'm lucky that my mom sends over homecooked meals at least once a week :)

I'm so ready to coast into the 2nd tri so I can get back into a routine!

  • I'm having major issues with raw meat... can not handle.  So i'll do anything to avoid it... lots of meat free meals in my house!

Ugh me too! We've bought a bunch of pre-cooked briscut and other things our local grocery store has in the deli that keep well and are easy to re-heat and are pretty good...or DH cooks hamburger helper...I can't even stand the thought of raw meat....Ick!

  • Crockpot meals!!!!! Seriously it's been a lifesaver for me. The thought of cooking makes me nauseaus too, but it's super easy to just through a bunch of junk in and have it ready when dh gets home.
I have made some yummy meals and we always have leftovers for lunch or to freeze.
I told dh the menu this week and he said he's loving this new crockpot kick i'm on, lol.
I just google whatever crockpot recipes, like chicken or beef. Also there's a group called "crock pot girls" on fb, they have a bunch of yummy recipes, even desserts!!
An even if i'm not feeling like eating it, once its done I normally have come around to eating it. If not at least dh &dd get a home cooked meal :)

  • Man. I used to looooove anything food/cooking. Now I can't even keep up with my fav blogs without getting nauseated.

So. We've been eating a lot of spaghetti, mac and cheese, hamburgers, frozen pizza. I can't do meat anymore aside from hamburger (which is still only sometimes). Salad isn't any good. Doing better with frozen vegetables though. DH made tacos last night. He's been a dear about doing a lot of the cooking these days. I'm hoping I'll feel better before we turn into blobs.

  • I'm right there with you.  Cooking is my favorite hobby. I have a huge recipe list on allrecipes.com and until I got pregnant, I checked there for new recipes every single day. Since then, I can't stomach the thought of cooking.

My spouse has been cooking every day--making a list of 3 or 4 options and letting me pick.  When it's just me at home...take out it is.

The few things I make are baked potatoes and heating up soup from a can.  They're about as easy as it gets at home and all I can stomach...

    You're not alone!

  • I normally love to cook but with a combo of exhaustion and aversions to so much food and smell wise... I have not been cooking much either.  But we've been spending entirely too much $$ on Chipotle and pizza lately so I tried to buy some things this weekend that I could make with little effort.  I bought frozen turkey meatballs and pasta sauce.  Hubby can throw those in the crockpot and then we just have to boil the pasta.  I also made soup in the crock pot this weekend that we can also eat throughout the week.  I find using the crockpot helpful because I can just throw everything in and not have to deal with a lot of the cooking smells.  Having said that, the chicken soup I cooked in there this weekend smelled and that made me feel nauseated.  So my long-winded answer is... use the crock pot!  :)  I also have stuff on hand for hubby to make pita pizzas.  Frequently I am not hungry at dinner time or cannot stomach any normal food.  This way, he is covered.  Good luck!

Oh, and also, I'm not so sure my sense of taste is working well enough to cook super tasty meals right now.  I cook something the way I normally would, then I taste test it and it tastes off to me, so I alter more.  DH hasn't complained yet... but I fear I'm giving him crap on a plate sometimes and I have no idea because everything tastes like crap on a plate to me.

  • I am a freak because I have been cooking more! The Pioneer Woman cooking blog has been my favorite. Lots of unhealthy stuff there.

  • Yeah hardly any cooking here. And then of course when I go to cook a delicious dinner last night the dang oven breaks. At least now I will finally get my double-convection oven of my dreams.

  • I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to feel better so I could cook again. But then I'm tired and lazy and don't want to. So we do a lot of easy stuff right now.

  • I really enjoy both cooking and baking too, but the smells get to me right now. I either come up with something really easy or we end up eating out, which is not so good.

I have some "go to" easy recipes for chicken tortilla soup and I like to check food blogs for easy pasta meals. We also do some kind of stir fry and brown rice once a week. I am hoping as I ease into this second tri it will get a little easier. GL!
