Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby jerking at night, usually while sleeping.

So I had my little boy 3 weeks early and he's just fabulous. I've noticed that he jerks or flails his arms sometimes while he's sleeping, almost like a startle but there is no noise. I thought maybe he was dreaming but my mother things something may be wrong. Does anyone else's little one do this or have you heard of this?

  • I think it's normal.  My babe does it all the time.

  • Don't let your mom freak you out!  It's absolutely normal!  And doesn't stop for a loooong time!  B breaks free of his swaddle instantaneously and all night long he lifts his legs up and slams them down on the mattress.

  • Thats normal.  Babies stir and startle during their sleep. Dont worry he is fine.  He will be making noises, smacking his lips, squirming and making a bunch of sounds in his sleep soon to keep you awake.

  • Mine flails arms, legs, toes, fingers, she even jerks her head all night long. Then she'll make random noises.

We joke she's fighting demons. It's entirely normal and gets better as they get older.

  • As everyone else said, totally normal.

Our LO did this since day one.  As time went on she got really upset when startled and would wake herself up....so, we started swaddling her and this really helped.

  • I thought I was the only one noticing this.  My daughter does it all the time and she a week old.  I guess it's natural for them at first.
  • It's nothing to worry about- all babies do this!  It's one of the reasons to swaddle.  They can't startle themselves awake when they are wrapped in a swaddle.  It goes away (or gets much less frequent) over the next few months.

  • Thanks everyone! Glad I'm not crazy. I kept telling my Mom that it was normal but she kept repeating that it wasn't so then naturally I got concerned...oh Mothers, oh wait, I am one now....lol.
