Can someone explain the Pokey Little Puppy to me?

For the life of me, I can not figure out why this book has endured and is a classic. What in the world is the moral of the story? Slow but disobedient gets the prize twice and fast but disobedient only once. I'm clearly missing something....or else I should start writing children's books.

  • I was just contemplating this story a couple of weeks ago. I'm with you -- I don't get it. I'm not sure what the moral of the story is. It's a very odd book.

  • It was one of my favorites as a kid, but now reading it- I don't get it either. Maybe that's why my generation and younger has problems.
  • I agree, I don't "get" that book, either.  Another one I don't get is Tootle, at the end he's all in the field then the guy waves the green flag and all is forgiven.

  • I get Tootle...at the end he realizes he belongs on the tracks and not in the fields. But the pokey puppy i am not sure about. But DS loves to say "tumble bumble" now.
  • It was my favorite book as a kid!  I had a little record player that would read the story and tell me when to change the pages.  It was awesome!

The story I don't get is Jack and the Beanstalk.  So Jack steals all the giants things and when the giant tries to get him - he cuts down the stalk and kills the giant.  Poor giant was just trying to defend his home!  Why is Jack the hero here?  He is a thief and murderer.

Also (and this is an UO) - Love you Forever.  I think the mom is beyond creepy and the book is weird.  Nothing cute and sweet about it.  The mom is a stalker and exactly the type of MIL that so many Bumpies post about.

Too funny,  Dr. Suess gets me a little.  Everytime I read one of his books DD asks whats a Glotz or a Thidwick.

I completely agree. This book makes me shudder. WTF is wrong with that mom? It's creepy, not sweet.

We should start writing our own...at least then they'd make sense! Of course, mine would probably end up being more like the new Go The Fvck To Sleep book than Pokey Little Puppy :)
