With DS1 my c/s was uneventful. DS2 arrived 2 days before his scheduled c/s, my bp crashed to 60/30 and we lost his hb for a bit while they were prepping me for my section. We both went back to normal and had a normal c/s delivery. However, I bled a lot in the recovery room and I vaguely remember it being very disconcerting for the nurse who was caring for me. She made a lot of phone calls and I could tell they were discussing needing a transfusion. The bleeding lightened up and I didn't need one and I never followed up with any questions on that.
I'm starting to remember that more now as I'm getting closer to c/s #3 and I'm getting nervous that it might be worse this time...
I will talk to my ob about this but I'd love to hear your exeperience if you had a transfusion (did you have complications during surgery?). If you had one before, have you heard that it's more likely to happen again or is it just different for each subsequent pregnancy?
TIA!
Re: need blood transfusion after delivery?
I bled a lot during my c/s. I had a uterine tear, and my ob had a hard time closing me up due to excessive bleeding. My doctors discussed a transfusion with me, but I opted to not get one because at the time, I just wanted to get home. A transfusion would have ment another day at the hospital. I was sent home with a prescription for iron.
In hindsight, I should have gotten the transfusion. I think it would have made my recovery a little easier. If we have a second and go the rcs route, I will be discussing this with my OB before hand.
You might want to see if starting on iron ahead of time might help, and I would definitely have a plan in place for the possiblity of a transfusion-just so your recovery nurses know your history and don't have to have a debate about it.

That's a good point. DS1 came to see me and the baby that afternoon (he was only 17mo) and I remember him being really weirded out by me. I always assumed it was just the IV and hospital gown he was upset by but I know I looked pretty bad the first day or two after. I bet that's why he was so upset! That never crossed my mind. I'll definitely have to just play it by ear this time around, if the delivery goes well they can come soon after but if I have complications like that it may be better to wait until the next day....

We're planning on having the girls come see the baby the afternoon after he's born (same day) but, if I have bleeding issues or if they are talking transfusions, I think I'll have them hold off a day. DD2 is much more sensitive than DD1 and I think she'll have many more problems seeing me like that.
Oh, and it was my MIL who pointed out why DD1 was so upset. She came in, said I looked like a ghost and kept the visit short and sweet.
