you all make me regret DD's name

I picked the most feminine, traditional, beautiful name - Charlotte. I could think of. It one more person even suggests calling her Charlie, I will go off the deep end.Charlotte is a family name and I have never heard of it being shortened to Charlie til recently.

WHY would someone take a feminine name and make it such a masculine name?!

Stop ruining my daughter's beautiful name! ahhhhh

Mom to 2 beautiful girls, 3 yrs and 22 months old. My 2nd was born at 32 weeks due to Rhogam failure/severe complications from Rh disease and is our miracle. She has bilateral auditory neuropathy and a cochlear implant, activated 4/5/2012 at 19 months. Lilypie First Birthday tickers

Re: you all make me regret DD's name

  • I love Charlotte. Good choice.

And for the LIFE of me, I do not understand the logic behind picking a nickname that is exactly the same number of syllables as the child's given name. If her name is Charlotte, call her Charlotte!!!

I assume its because they like the contrast and the different options it gives the person to choose which persona they like best. However, if "Charlie" is not your little Charlotte, just keep nicely correcting people and eventually everyone will get the message. I think Charlotte is beautiful and unlike a Christopher whose parents don't want to be called Chris, this is a battle you can win.

You know, I am a BIG NN-er, but I mostly come down on this side, too, with few exceptions.

Umm..because some people like the nn Charlie. WHY do you care what other people choose to do with that name?

I understand that you don't want other people calling your own daughter by that name, but beyond that who cares?

Sorry you regret you child's name, but it sounds like you are getting your panties into a bunch over something stupid. Deal with it. Move on.

  • I think you're being a bit dramatic. If someone tries to call her Charlie, just correct them.

  • There is a little girl in my K class named Charlotte and we call her Charlie. I think it is adorable. I think some of the ladies are right on when they say "get over it" but I will be a little more sensitive and say "who cares?" Unfortunately parents don't always get to choose the nicknames. This little girl actually decided she wanted to be called Charlie and her parents weren't thrilled but they are going with it. Sometimes you can't control everything in your LO's life. That's easy for me to say, my son's name doesn't really come with nicknames ;)

  • I agree with you.  Charlotte is beautiful!  I recently realized the girl on the Princess and the Frog is named Charlotte, but they sometimes call her Lotte (Lottie Sp?).  I think that is cute too.  But why give a beautiful name just to shorten it.  I have the same gripe with the nickname Ali.

  • Lotte as in Little Lotte? Phantom reference? :)

  • I only know one Charlotte and her nn is Char. Her father is Charles as is her brother who goes by Charlie so I guess that nn was never an option.

  • Considering the hard Char sound doesn't appear in the name Charlotte, I personally think Charley's a stupid nickname anyway.

  • My daughter is Charlotte, but has been Charley since day one. My FIL is Charlie and he is honored that we have chosen to nickname our first child after him. I can't understand why what i call my Charlotte would effect you or your Charlotte in the least. It suits her perfectly and some day I hope she would like to be called Charlotte. For now she's my sweet Charley.

This. And if you're talking about people on the board wanting to use Charlie as a nickname for Charlotte you're just going to have to get over it. You don't own the name.

  • Charlotte is my #1 girls name (my g-ma's name).  I would absolutely not call her Charlie.  Char maybe, not Charlie.

I just have a dislike in general for all these posts where people want nicknames...maybe I'm old school, but whats wrong with a nice solid name that you use daily?  Just my opinion.

  • Charlotte is a feminine form of Charles, thus the nickname Charlie.

  • I think Charlotte is beautiful.  I think Charlie as a nickname sounds cute for about 3 seconds, then we realize this is a girl...not a boy.  I think that every time I hear Rebecca Romain (former Stamos) twin name which I believe is Charlie.  I don't like it.

  • Are you serious? Why do you care what other people call their child as a nickname? I find it really hard to believe that you have never heard of Charlie as a nickname for Charlotte before.

She is the cutest Charley I have ever seen! I think that name is adorable for her.

  • DD's name is Alexandria and people often shorten it to Alex. NBD. Just correct them if you don't like it.

  • I think you need to take a deep breath here.  Just because some people use Charlie as a NN for Charlotte (or suggest it) doesn't affect your DD's name.  Just keep calling her Charlotte and correct people if necessary.

  • Sorry but I like Charlie as a NN for Charlotte too. My DD gets called Addie which I don't love but she has that  playful option one day.

Totally agree with this. I don't get why people need to have a NN before the baby is born. DS doesn't have a NN and I get irate when people try to call him A.J. I hate that NN! Charlotte is a beautiful name. Charlie not so much.

  • I don't like it when a girl is given a boys nickname, especially with such a feminine name to begin with. Just not my style.

  • THE FACTS:

    1. Charlie is a common nickname for Charlotte.

    2. Lots of people think it's cute. That's why they use it.

    3. It's not the rest of the world's fault that you live under a rock and remained ignorant of facts #1 and #2.
