Babies on the Brain

Working moms, when do you exercise?

I need to get back into it.

My schedule is usually dropping the kids off at 645, heading to school, getting set up for the day, teaching, cleaning up/prepping/meetings, and picking the kids up around 5/530. The gym that I'm a member of has classes at 530pm I could take but I feel bad leaving them at gym daycare after I had just picked them up. DH leaves early (6am) so honestly I'm not sure I'd stick with getting up at 5 to go for a run before he leaves.

I'm hoping things will calm down a bit at school and I'll feel like I'm not drowning every day so maybe I could get a run in after school, but until then I need ideas!

Re: Working moms, when do you exercise?

  • If DH is picking O up from day care I usually try to do the bike for about 20 mins when I get home from work before they get here.  And then sometimes we do abs after she goes to bed, but its hard to be consistent for me.

  • I only have excuses why I don't work out...we have an elliptical in our basement..and a nice one at that.

Before I went back to work and R took good day naps, I would grab the baby monitor and hop on the elliptical for a good 30-45 min.  Now, being back at work, the house is a disaster and R rarely takes long naps during the day (unless i'm holding her).  So it's really hard to get in a workout.... now that it's cooled down, we do go for a walk in the neighborhood.

I really want to get back into it.  But 1) I hardly have energy.  I work nights and am already sleep deprived from that then add in the days I don't work and taking care of R and 2) finding time is hard.

I'm thinking about getting hiring someone to come clean my house once a month to at least make it decent...that way I can use my spare time to play with R and have some me time instead of stressing about the disaster zone.  Maybe a  christmas present.  And once a month would be doable...our house isn't that huge

  • I have a gym right below my office, and a flexible lunch hour, so I do about a 40 minute workout, either running or lifting, over lunch.

In the evenings I'll run with the jogging stroller or I'll put Jack on the bike and go for a bike ride.

In the winter or during bad weather, I have a few stand-by DVDs, some yoga, 30 day shred, etc. which I do with Jack in the room.  He loves the yoga ones - he mimics what I'm doing.

I try to work out at least once a day, six days a week and between all of these options I'm usually pretty able to keep with it.

  • On weekdays I go after she is asleep on the nights my husband can stay home.
On the nights he's gone, I put her bed and then run on a hand-me-down treadmill someone gave us.  I alternate this with DVDs.

On the weekends, I try to escape for an hour or so to run by myself either outside or at the gym.  I dont' feel so bad about the gym daycare on a Sat/Sun for only an hour, on the off chance DH can't stay with the baby.

I try to do something for an hour each day, roughly 5 - 6 days/week.

  • I do the 30 DS usually around 7:30 or 8 pm after kids are in bed.  Sometimes I can sneak it in between dinner and baths.  It sucks.

  • I have to get up early and do it or I will never go.

What time does your DH get off work? Could he pick the kids up a couple days a week so you could work out after work?

He works late (between 6 and 7) so he couldn't pick up. I'm bad at getting up early, but I have a feeling it's going to be my only option, and I'll just have to go to bed early. I have a friend who will run with me, but she's running a half marathon next week and I'm nowhere near that kind of shape. I feel like I'll be holding her back.

I've got a run date on Sundays, so I was thinking tues/thurs AMs with my other friend (the marathoner, we'll see how long that goes). I do have 30DS so maybe a day of that.

I think I'm going to get rid of my gym membership. I pay $6 each time I drop the kids off on top of my membership fee.

  • I don't.  Can't imagine where I'd find the time or energy.  I lie to myself and count all the walking around the school and house work as exercise.

  • Depends on the day and my schedule for the week, but for the most part, I work out when I get home from work (around 6). Today I am off, and I was able to work out before DH and DS came home from camping. I try to work out about 5-6 days a week, and do mostly aerobic walking DVDs or the 30 day Shred.

I realize though I am in a much different boat though, my son is school age and self-sufficient. I know it is probably a little tougher for you.

  • I don't. I wish I did, but there is just no time. I would seriously have to get up at 5am to workout and then I would be a b!thcy zombie the rest of the day.

I take CJ to day care and pick him up. DH usually gets home shortly after we do - close to 5 and then it's time to make dinner, eat, spend some times as a family and then bed.

I do go to a yoga class once a week at 7:15. That is the only "me" time I usually get.

I have been thinking about starting the 30 day shred again. Because I could do that once Christopher goes down for the night...if I find the motivation.

  • Right now, I don't work out, because I feel like complete shiit.  I feel like such a slug.

Before getting KU'd:  I'd do treadmill or P90x after Dane went to bed.  Sometimes I'd do the abs video before work (a few days a week, I have an hour to myself before going to work).

  • On the weekends we go to the gym as a family, both days.  Sadie loves the daycare there and they'll keep her for 2 hours, so I get in a nice long workout and I get a chance to steam/spa & shower.  During the week I work out  2-3 other times, as does DH.  We just trade off who has to get the baby down and dinner ready.  On those days I usually do a yoga or spin class at 6pm or go for a late night swim around 8.  It's really hard, but it's important to me.  If we have a truly crazy week though, I take advantage of the gym in my building.  It's pretty bare bones but I can at least run for 45 min on the treadmill.  I also keep a decent stash of workout dvd's at home so that I can do them in the early AM if need be.

    Sadie is not impressed.
