So we're starting the house buying process. We're the only ones that know its for sale and the seller set the (reasonable) price. The only thing that can hold this process up is the bank (whether through the loan, the appraisal or the inspection).
(Back story for anyone that doesn't know. House belongs to estate of family friend who has no existing family. Executor offered the house to H and I at a great deal and we're in the starting stages of the loan process with the bank. The estate wants us to get it and we want it, but there's a lot of interior work that needs to be done (new heating system, drywall repair, etc). We have always had a key to the house because I helped out with the man who lived there, who was alone and 89 when he passed away. We have permission from the seller to go in and out as we need/want to and the house is pretty much empty currently.)
Right now, we don't know when closing will be, although it will likely be as late as 11/11/11 (ironic, eh?).
We were discussing Halloween and if we could take L t-o-t'ing/hand out candy in the new neighborhood in order to meet the neighbors (vs the just walking up to the door, knocking and saying "Hi!"). How weird would it be if we're not moved in yet, but handing out candy? (H) Or is it a great idea to meet people in a casual way? (me)
Re: Random question, weird or not weird
I keep going back and forth on it. :-. We might very well be actually moved in by then, we're trying to get things going quickly so we can be in before the weather gets nasty.

I wouldn't want to jinx it.

You know me. +6k
Weird.
Also, if I were another parent in the neighborhood and some random couple borrowed a vacant house to hand out candy to my kids, I would call the police.
I mean, I'm not saying that you are a random couple, but if the house isn't on the market and it's been vacant awhile, I think it's a logical conclusion for neighbors to make and I would be freaked out.
Weird and this
*gigglesnort* I could be random, you don't know. Side note though, fwiw, my car has been in and out of that house regularly for years. I have just never met any of the neighbors because I never had need to. I'm seeing the point you guys are making though. Once the bank does their inspection and approves it (hopefully within the next couple of weeks), we're going to be going over and starting some of the repair work that needs to be done. I'm hoping the closing will happen before Halloween. Currently, our purchase agreement states if the closing date doesn't happen before 11/11, the agreement is null and void, so I imagine things will be moving quickly. The only thing holding us back right now is the official red tape through the bank.

Hi! We're Mr & Mrs Balls....
I think that'll be an even quicker call to the police, eh? :-P
I thought about that, but it just seemed weirder because L is so little, ykwim?
