Tell me I'm crazy

Because I want a puppy in a I'm-10-years-old kinda way. My totally awesome Boxer passed away when Sully was 10 days old and I was devastated. DH has a dog that just isn't my speed and we haven't bonded at all (mostly because she wants us to return DS...), and I really miss that relationship you get with a rockin dog. So, ladies- am I crazy to be cleaning up poop after 2 beings? Or is this the perfect time to get a pups- so it will grow up with Sully and be "his" puppy, too?

ETA: If we get a puppy, it will be a pound puppy!

Re: Tell me I'm crazy

  • Well, I'm not going to tell you that dogs are alot of work because you know that. If you are willing to be a good pet parent while also being a good mommy to your LO I say go for it!

We got our first dog right before I found out I was pregnant with baby #2. It has been hard at times, but totally worth it because Thor loves the kids like they are his own. And they love him just the same.

It's awesome that you are getting a pound puppy but I think its very important that you do some research to see what kind of dogs are great family dogs, and good around children.

  • Your not crazy, I would be devastated without either of my dogs. But...I think I would rather have another newborn than have to train a new puppy. Also, not sure how winter is where you live but, training a puppy in the winter here is a special version of total hell.

  • I don't think you are crazy, but if it were me I would probably wait until LO was a year or more. The new puppy takes a lot of work, but you also have to train the dog to be around a baby as well. I don't think I would gamble with a dog I don't know around a baby. At least if LO is walking around and a bigger toddler size, I wouldn't worry as much about a new dog. When dealing with a new crawler and walker in the next few months, I don't think a puppy would be a good mix. ETA: I saw your addition about it being from the pound. I think that is a great idea down the road, but no way with a baby.

  • We are contemplating the same thing. We know it will be crazy, but we are crazy already - so what's the difference, right? lol

  • I don't think that's crazy! I couldn't go without having a pet of my own for long. I will say that I've had a lot of dogs and only two puppies, because I can't deal with pee on the carpet, chewing, and the hyperness that comes with it, but if that's your thing, go for it. The best dogs I've ever gotten were about a year old from the pound.

A tip that's always worked for me: most dogs at the pound are barking, go for the 2 or 3 that aren't (as long as they are acting friendly). I've gotten the most laid back, low maintenance dogs, which comes in handy now with LO.

  • I think the sooner the better.  I was terrified of dogs as a kid so I'm glad that we already have a dog for DS to grow up with.  Our dog was indifferent of DS when we first brought him home but now she's definitely come around.  I can't wait to see how their relationship "blossoms"!

  • I personally would not even want to handle potty training a puppy right now (unless she was exactly like my first dog who potty trained herself!), but if it's something that you really want I say go for it! You have had animals before, and now, so you know exactly what you're getting into. And thumbs up to the pound puppy!!!!

  • You are crazy. And cleaning up the poop would probably be the easiest part. Stick out tongue

If it were me, I would hold out a bit longer. I think we sometimes forget how much time and attention a puppy takes once we have a full grown dog, kind of like we supposedly forget how tough it was to go through childbirth and have a newborn. Wink Plus, a puppy will likely be all over your LO with it's super sharp little puppy claws and teeth. And there's all the getting up for potty breaks in the middle of the night, etc.

Good for you for planning to save a pound puppy though!! GL!

  • Not crazy, but kind of depends on what you baby is up to. My dog passed away when DD was 4 months, we then adopted a pup (9 months old) when DD 7 months. It has been ALOT of work, but then again, we have no freetime anyway. DD LOVES the puppy and we probably have the puppy better trained to stay away from Cecilia/her toys then she is! Now that DD is crawling she is all about getting the dogs toys!
