is this normal?! mandrain oranges & poo

My DD ate a ton of mandarin oranges yesterday and today I'm seeing them practically whole in her poo.  Is this normal?  It seems like she's not digesting them or something.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. DS has never eaten enough oranges for us to see that, but it happens often with raisins and sometimes corn. If she doesn't seem to be digesting other things that would be another story but it's probably just because she ate so many.

  • Yep, my LO loves oranges. They also have amazing sticking power>. Its very hard to get all the little pieces.

  • Totally normal. I have also seen whole blueberries, edamame, and corn. Good stuff!

  • YES, DD loves the little clemintines and will eat them all day if given the chance.  The pulp is right there in the poop.  Gross for sure but no worse than raisins that just plump up or carrots Ick!

  • i've noticed that too, so i think it is pretty normal. i wanted to ask something else... when i was at the 1 year appt this week, i was giving ds segments to snack on and the pedi told me they were choking hazards. has anyone else heard this? do you give your child whole segments? do you remove the membranes? do you cut them up? i mean, he's practically eaten a whole bag at this point, but i don't want to be cavalier about it.

I'm sure they are choking hazards if you give you child a stack of them and leave them in another room to eat them?? Maybe. Sounds like your kid can manage just fine. I give DS whole grapes *gasp* with the skin on too!! But he can eat them just fine. He bites the skin as he pops them in his mouth and does the same with mandarin segments. But I also don't leave him unattended when he's eating.

As for the OP poo question, yup, totally normal. We see orange, corn, re-hydrated raisins, pumpkin seeds and lots of different grains from bread!
