Naps getting worse after STTN?

We did sleep training two weeks ago. DS has been pretty much been STTN for the last week. Some nights he will wake up once but be back asleep in less than 5 mins. He sleeps ~11 hours at night.

BUT his naps have gotten SO much worse. His first nap of the day is usually OK (60-120 mins, with a couple short wake-ups) but every other nap is 20 - 30 mins and he wakes up crying so I know he is still tired. Then he is a cranky mess bc he needs more sleep.

I don't know if it is related to STTN or maybe the 4 month wakeful during the day? We try sleep training/CIO when he wakes up but we never know how long to do it for and usually end up just getting him up bc it gets close to a feeding time. (He has been eating every 3 hours.)

If he took short naps and woke up happy, I would be OK with it, but he wakes up miserable and it sucks.

  • Yes, it's normal. Night sleep organizes first, then naps.  You will probably have a really cruddy first nap of the day, then maybe a better 2nd nap, followed by a possible cat nap to hold over to bedtime (which will get dropped here soon.)

Eventually, I'm hoping to have my DD on a 9-10:30/11 and 1:00/1:30-3:30 type of nap routine. Until then, we ride it out :) She's doing pretty well and has completely stopped using the swing in the last few weeks (thanks to some weaning)

I just say, be happy with that long stretch at night for the time being. As we get closer to 6 months, it will start working itself out.

  • One more thing...sorry :) How many hours is he STTN? Be mindful of that...most babies need 10-12 hours of night sleep and 3-4 hours of day sleep.  Say he is getting 12 hours at night, he may only need 3 during the day.  Hopefully that makes sense.

Lately, the first nap has been the best nap of he day! It goes downhill after that:(

  • With the 11 hours at night thing, be content, I guess.  Just watch for the organization of 1 nap in the a.m. and another in the p.m. Some kids are pulling a catnap in the 4-5 range to get to bedtime and that's okay too.  I think what happens is they drop that catnap and it becomes 2 naps, 1-2 hours each.  Good luck! I know the frustration!

  • I must have jinxed it since he only slept 10 hours last night and was up at 5:15. Ugh. Way too early.

I am starting to think we may be keeping him up too long between naps. We have been pushing him to 2 hours of awake time and maybe it is too long.
