dumb question for air travel with formula

This may sound incredibly stupid, but how do you travel with formula on a plane? Do you just take the powder and then use water from the flight attendants or do they let you bring your own water? Do you mix it beforehand? Do you have to keep it cold? Would it be better to just use the pre-mixed bottles? I had planned to EBF, so I never researched formula.

I'm travelling by plane and hope to have enough expressed BM, but want to have formula just in case since my supply is low.  LO doesn't latch well, so I don't want to attempt to BF him on the plane in case he goes into a screaming fit.

  • Yes take the powder.  You can either bring bottled water or even buy some nursery water (in gallon sized containers) on the plane.  You could also ask the flight attendants for water although if its bottled you may have to pay for it.  I imagine that they would have filtered water on planes as "tap" water but that is the only thing I am not sure. I wouldn't mix it before hand in this case. It can sit at room temperature for about 2 hours after being mixed.  Some sources say more like 4 but I try not to let my mixed formula sit longer than about 2 hours.  If you pre-mix it is good for 24 hours refrigerated, just an FYI.  Also you have to use the formula once its mixed and your LO starts feeding within the hour. This is because babies saliva can cause bacteria to grow in the formula. This being said if you don't know how many oz your LO will take at a time I suggest starting small and then making more if he is still hungry.  That way you aren't wasting any or as much.   So if this were me, I would just mix it as I go.

  • If you go through the family line at security, you can bring your own water.  Even for toddlers.  They will just hold a strip over it to test.

  • You can also pour out water into bottles, and they'll fume test it. You can prep a bottle beforehand (breast milk/formula) and they'll do a fume test on that too. You can carry a sealed container of formula, or I had a tupperware container of formula and rice cereal and we were fine. I did the mixing as needed.
  • Thanks, everyone!
