Cloth Diapering

XS BG leak question

ok so ive started cd-ing my newborn full-time now. We started with a couple lil joeys which fit great and we have no leak problems but I purchased mostly xs bg's from the seconds sale on cottonbabies for my newborn stash. Our problem is that every single time she pees...it leaks out. I am thinking its a fit issue because this is the first time I am using them so it can't be a repelling issue (I did a prep wash with Rockin Green and 2 additional cold rinses to insure all suds were gone). I am pretty sure she is leaking out the top/side (like right where the tab gets pulled from the back to the front) and its only pee...the poop only diapers aren't leaking. When I take off the diaper, it is thoroughly soaked and heavy so I know its full of pee. What should I be doing differently? My husband is getting a little frustrated bc we are constantly changing her clothes bc the pee leaks all over them and I don't want him to get discouraged with the cd's. Oh and my little girl is 10 days old, weighs about 7lbs 8oz and is fairly slim in the belly area. She def doesn't have chunky legs either, although I really can't determine if she is leaking out the legs too or not...but I know def the top/side. I am fastening the velcro as snugly as I feel possible and I know that is snug around her legs.

Any suggestions as to what to do?

Re: XS BG leak question

  • How often are you changing your DD?  If it is completely soaked, it is just that there isn't enough absorbency.  We changed DD almost hourly at that age because she was eating all the time and peeing/pooping all the time.

  • FWIW, my baby was leaking through BG XS before they stopped fitting her, but I couldn't use them any more. Lil Joeys were more absorbent, but of course, she grew out of them before she leaked out of them....!  They just might not be a good fit right now. If you have enough other dipes, I'd put the BG aside until she fattens up a bit :)

  • Our entire NB stash was XS BG AIO.  My DS came home from the hospital at 7lbs7oz and we have used them since then. It sounds like you might need to change her a little more often if the diapers are heavy and wet when you change her.  He outgrew the absorbency before he outgrew the fit but that wasn't until much later (about 5 weeks or so).  Try crossing the tabs over (so that they fasten on top of one another) and check where the diapers meet her legs (in between and on the sides) to make sure there are no gaps.  It will get better as she chunks up a little- I promise! GL and congrats on your newbie!

  • It's been a couple years since I've used XS BGs but I do remember them leaking.  I took one or two cloth wipes and folded them in half and laid them inside the diaper for extra absorbancy and that seemed to help.

  • Thanks ladies...you all were right...we needed to change more frequently. I was changing every 3 hours or so....which coincided with her feedings...but now we are changing every 2 hours and we haven't had a leak since  Big Smile
