Lyla vs. Lila

It's going to be the middle name of my first daughter if I have one, and I was just wondering if Lyla is a correct way to spell this name because I like the Y better than the I :)

Re: Lyla vs. Lila

  • I love it spelled Lilah. It is one of my best friend's name.

  • I hadn't seen the "y" until last year and really prefer the more traditional Lila. Looks like the random "y" syndrome to me.

  • I like  Lilah actually :)
  • This is our #1pick if we have a daughter.  It will be Lilah though.  We love it!

  • Lila  or Lilah, but not Lyla.
  • I never heard the name until my SIL/BIL used it for my niece (spelled Lyla).
So the "y" is the most normal spelling to me. But I do prefer more traditional spellings and would also probably vote for Lilah.

  • Lila.  Lyla makes me think too much of Lyle (Lyle Lyle, Crocodile actually!)

This. The "y" spelling completely ruins this name for me. Yuck. Lila is the traditional spelling, but I would choose Lilah looooong before Lyla.

I would spell it with a "y" only because my dad's name is Lyle (I wouldn't use Lyle as a boys name, but would honor dad with a Lyla). Otherwise I like the I.

  • I much prefer Lila. Lyla looks tacky with the Y IMO.

  • I prefer Lyla as well.  I don't think it looks made up or anything because it almost looks like the girl version of Lyle.

Just a tid-bit for you....  In Hungary, the government does not allow the letter "Y" in names, except for very affluent and/or famous people.  So I personally think the "Y" makes it classy.  Example.. you know Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order?  You can tell she came from a well-to-do family because otherwise her name would be spelled Hargitai, like most people with that last name.

  • I like Lilah. My mom had a friend growing up named Lila and it was pronounced Lee-lah so that is how I say Lila in my head when I see it.
  • I think Lila looks more grown up
  • Ok so I'm probably going to be the only one that says this but I like Lilah or Lyla. I pronounce Lila differently like Lily. So Lil-uh. I pronounce Lyla and Lilah like Lie-la. I also like h's at the end b/c to me names just don't look finished with out them like Sarah, Norah, Lilah. Im probably the only one who feels this way though...

  • Definitely Lila.

Lilah is okay, but I'm a Sara, so I tend to steer clear of the superfluous h's. Hate the whole "y" trend unless it's a family thing, as PP mentioned.

  • I like Lyla better and it is a more recent, but more popular spelling in the last year. Lilah is the least common and whereas some other dislike the "random y", I dislike the random "h" on the end.

  • Ha. I have never heard of "random y syndrome" but I like the term. This is a perfect example. But, I am more traditional.
  • I'll tell you why Lila is the correct spelling: because this was my mother's name, and she would have been 68 this year. Until a few years ago, no one, and I mean NO ONE, outside of our very small family had ever heard of this name. So I consider my mother to be the 'original' Lila :)

Somehow this name came into popularity a few yrs ago and ruined my plan to give my daughter her grandmother's unique name. Yes, I still named her Lila, spelled this way (the correct way!), but it now seems like she's one of the many other trendy-named kids.
