Babies on the Brain

Since it's slow I'm going to complain

This whole food intolerance thing... it sucks. It really sucks. I'm always hungry, and I'm tired! It's only been 3ish weeks but the planning, and researching and frantic googling, and bringing my own food to get-togethers and saying no to people's homemade foods, it's hard.

We've introduced some things with varying reactions but I'm pretty certain it's dairy/soy/beef. Cashews and peanuts seem okay, so do hazlenuts. Eggs had a slight reaction, which sucks because I'm really tired of oatmeal for breakfast. Wheat went okay with him but MY stomach/GI was a mess for a few days so I'm leaving that alone until at least after our trip.

Trying to explain what I don't eat and why to my MIL was a mess. I'll definitely be on my own for food while on our trip, and I can't expect her to cater to me, I'm just unsure how and what I'll be eating when we don't have a car/are 2000 miles away.

Ugh. It's worth it, I know it is. He's gaining weight finally and filling out and he's much happier without the affects of whatever it was that bugs him, but still. Ugh.

  • That must be hard, but you're a great mommy for doing this for him. Many people would have given up already.  O never had food allergies, how do you know what affects him and what doesn't?

  • You are SO strong and awesome to be doing this! I only had to do a portion of this for a few weeks and it SUCKED! I basically made myself homemade soup and lived off of it for lunch/dinner. Hang in there, mama!!

Well, the only way to ever know is to test it. You eliminate everything it could be (within reason) and then test things and wait a few days for a reaction. His reactions so far have ranged from a rash to projectile vomiting (with bile) and kelly green mucusy poop, and slow weight gain.

The other daunting thing is the constant monitoring. I mean, I do it anyways of course but having to remember what I ate yesterday and what could be causing that rash or is he fussy today or is he breathing funny, etc.

And I'll be doing it for forever.

  • First off, you are doing AMAZING! Its extremely hard but you're seeing first hand the benefits.

Second, it does get easier. I promise. Especially since you're able to add back some things. Once wheat is back, it'll open pandora's box for breakfast foods (like bagels and pancakes and cinnamon rolls).

    I'm sorry your trip is going to be difficult, I can't imagine traveling with this diet. {{hugs}}

  • I'm sorry Ashley! That would be so, so hard. You are an amazing mama for making so many sacrifices. Other moms wouldn't be able to do it.

oh, nope, not private, I just wanted a cleaner siggy, and I'm kind of being a crappy blogger lately so I didn't really want to advertise it right now. It's lifeasashlet.com though :)

No problem!  I've started like 3 or 4 different blogs throughout the last few years.  I'm done trying.  Thanks  :)

I think we'll be driving the 30miles to Whole Foods while there to get some stuff. I think there's a Central Market too maybe?

And I think so! The soyfree is the killer. Thanks for the link!

  • That has got to be so hard. You are awesome for doing it though. Is it at least helping with post baby weight loss? That is the only positive I can see in this situation. Well, that and being able to BF of course.

Shoot, lots of them contain Soy Flour.  That may be a deal breaker.  Sad

We just bought the whole grain for E, and they are well rated for taste.

  • I think you are amazing for not giving up. You know I am in the same boat with Eli, sort of, & when the gi put him on Elecare for the next 6 months,I gave up with breast feeding. Keep it up, you are doing great!

Lol it would be if I wasn't putting coconut milk in everything. I'm doing WW too to make sure I'm eating the right amount. It's coming off slowly, but the key for me and weight loss has always been hard exercise and I'm easing into that slowly.

That was one of my first thoughts when the Doc mentioned all the things I'd eliminate, lol.

  • You are amazing for doing this. It will be worth it.

This and if it makes you feel any better (it probably won't LOL) you'd probably be tired and hungry all the time even w/o the food restrictions.

  • If nuts are not bothering him, try nut flours (or meals).  I cook with almond meal all the time and it delicious.

I bet he will grow out of some of these over the next few months, so you should try this stuff periodically.

You are doing a GREAT job!

  • I can't imagine how hard that must be!  Have you wandered over to the Allergy board?  It's for kids with allergies but they'd certainly be able to share with you substitutions they make for their kids that you'd be able to use.  GL!

  • Giant hugs!  Chase had issues with dairy and it was not easy and that was only one primary agreement.  I will say he seemed to grow out of it a little after his 1st birthday.

I eliminated dairy this time prior to delivery.  I am just not starting to see how she does with dairy and I am hoping it goes ok.

Stick with it, it will be worth it.. I promise!
