Babies: 9 - 12 Months

will you buy a 3 in 1 carseat or

Just buy a convertible carseat and a booster later? I'm trying to safe some $$ since i have to buy 2 of them at a time. I would like to buy a convertible carseat that will switch to a booster as well. Thanks!

  • we just bought a 3 in 1 today. i figured if i'm gonna have to get a booster anyway, i might as well just go with that. we have a 20% off at BRU so it wasnt terrible... then again, we only had to buy one! LOL. GL

  • We got a convertible. Honestly, I didn't know there was such a thing as a 3in1. We plan to have another baby in couple years so I guess that kid can always use the convertible once J is ready for a booster.

  • We only bought the convertible. Like PP said, a future baby will use that one when DS is in the booster. I think my mom just bought a Graco booster for my nephew and it was only like $40 so it won't break the bank like the convertibles can.

  • By the time Cole is ready for the booster we hope to have another LO who would likely be in the convertible seat, so we skipped the 3 in 1 and will just be a booster later on.

    This is our plan also.

  • We bought a convertible and will buy a booster when the time comes. Buying a 3 in 1 didn't really cross my mind.

  • I bought a 3 in 1 without doing any research and if I could do it again, I would have just got a convertible. Most 3 in 1 seats don't make good boosters because of the belt position. I have the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite (it is sold under about 7 other names too). It made the Top 10 Worst Boosters of 2010 list. It only harnesses to 40lbs, which is the biggest draw back IMO. I will keep using it for now because DS is still RF but I plan to buy another seat in the future. I might buy a another convertible with a higher RF and FF weight limit or just get a 5pt harness booster seat.

  • We got a 3 in 1 for just under $200. RF up to 35 lbs, FF with 5 pt harness up to 60 lbs, and FF as booster with seat belt up to 100 lbs. C is a big baby, we needed something to work with his height and weight at a younger age.

  • I got a great deal on a convertible seat.  We'll just buy a booster later.  We want to keep E rear facing for as long as possible.

  • I got a convertible only after reading the poor safety reviews of the 3 in 1's. Most are uncomfortable and unsafe as boosters due to the belt position. Also with 3 in 1's, they will usually expire before the kid outgrows them/no longer requires a booster (8-12 years old according to AAP). So you are faced with the choice of buying a new booster anyway or using an expired carseat.

  • I bought a 3-1 for my toddler and gave her convertible to my infant. Honestly, after setting up the 3-1 (Graco Nautilus), I wouldn't put my baby in there yet...it doesn't recline the way our convertible (Marathon) does and I don't like that for her yet.

The Nautilus is a booster seat. The 3 in 1 type of seat the OP is talking about is a RF, FF, and booster seat in one.

The nautilus is actually sold marketed as a 3-in-1 it's a FF, belt positioning booster and backless booster in 1.

This.  Don't be fooled, they will not be the only seat your kid ever needs.  And most of them get horrible reviews.

  • Convertible and we'll buy a booster when it's time.

  • I haven't heard anything good about 3 in 1 carseats, so we went with a convertible. Besides, the seat would be considered obsolete by the time she'd be in a booster anyway.
