Breastfeeding

Do breastfed babies really "top out" at 25-30oz?

What if they are combo breastfed and formula fed?  Also, is it 25-30oz even if it is expressed breast milk?

  • They do, since breastmilk changes consistency instead of changing volume, if that makes sense. Don't know about combo formula + breastmilk, but I'd guess that winds up a bit more ounce-wise since formula is always the same amount of calories and breastmilk has a pretty big range of calories (I think it's like 18-44, depending on time of day and fat content). Expressed breast milk would be the same as breastfeeding directly if the pumped milk is from the same time as a replaced feed. So, if a baby eats at 8, 11, 2, etc. and they get the pumped milk from around the same time of day, it should wind up being approximately the same.

Well, I EP, so the milk from a while day is mixed together and he eats that in his bottles the next day.  Sometimes he eats freezer milk from a couple months ago so I can rotate my stash.

  • DD usually takes between 26 & 32 oz, depending on how her day is (all pumped milk). But she's also eating 3 solid meals/day and snacks. Once you start solids, the growth spurts really become increases in solid intake rather than milk. DD didn't up her milk intake at all for her 6 month growth spurt, but she started getting 3 solid meals. Leading up to 9 months, she did up her milk intake a little bit, but only by a couple oz.

My sister's baby has had bad issues with allergies and at 10 months is barely beginning solids. He takes a LOT more that 30oz of formula/day. I think something like 50+!

  • The most Mj had was about 35oz (5 bottles at 7oz eacg) until we started we started solids.  Now it's dropped to 4-5 bottles with 5oz per and a few times a day he leaves an oz or two in the bottle.

  • DS was on close to 50/50 formula and breastmilk and seems to have topped out at 36oz and dropped back to around 30oz now that he is STTN and down to one bottle of formula a day.  I can only hope that he sticks with this, otherwise I'll have to up the amount of formula he gets because my supply is barely meeting current needs.
