Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Have I created a food snob?

LO has been eating solids for about a month now, and so far I've made all of her fruits and veggies. Tonight I realized she was out of peaches, so I just opened one of the jars we have for backup. This was the first time she'd eaten jarred food. As soon as the peaches were in her mouth, she gagged and spit it out. She's never done this before. I have to admit that I tasted them, and my homemade peaches taste SO much better, but can a 5 month old really distinguish between taste like that? I hope I haven't created a food snob!

  • The good news is that she is used to and likes what fruits and veggies actually taste like. Fingers crossed that it will be easier for her to eat them as she gets older.

  • Haha! This same thing happened to us tonight. Usually DHs grandma sends us chicken and veggie puree. Today I wasn't able to go by and pick it up, so Mason got a jar of chicken and sweet potatoes. He wasn't as excited about that as he usually is for dinner at all! Poor baby.... but he is a chunky monkey so he did eat it all.

  • My DS was the same way.  I made all of his food and he ate a ton of fresh fruits and veggies when he was an infant.  One time we were travelling so I decided to buy a few jarred items for convenience.  DS refused to eat them and spit them out.  I tried it and I could see why he spit them out.  Jarred baby food is nasty.  I think DS developed a taste for the good stuff and wasn't going to settle for anything less :)

Unfortunately as a toddler, DS has become the worst eater and it is a struggle everyday to get him to eat any fruits or veggies.  I thought since I made these great fresh fruits and vegetables for him that it would give him a better start and more likely would continue to eat those things as he gets older - not so much :(  Hopefully you'll have better luck!

  • We've just started on fruits and veggies. I've given her some fresh but also some Earth's Best jarred food, and she likes both. I must admit, I've tried all the jarred food before she's gotten it, and it's quite tasty! If it was nasty, I wouldn't give it to her.
